Many thanks for all your encouraging comments to perservere with the Rover engine. As I am unfamiliar with just how it should be I am lapping it all up.

I knew that the Landy's forte was the bush. A good friend told me years ago (70s) that he had spent time in Tasmania doing exploration. They had both Land Rovers and Landcruisers. On the open road everyone rushed to get the Cruisers, but in the bush the Landys were first choice.
