    Series 2a/3 hybrid

    Hi All,
I'm looking at a series 3, rebuilt with series 2a panels, in the UK.
The year of manufacture, identification, numbers and paperwork are per the chassis, which is series 3. Before going any further, I need to confirm whether features such as the all-metal 2a dash and headlights-in-grill are likely to cause issues come Qld registration time. Anyone had any experience with a similar situation?
    Thanks in advance.

I doubt you'll have problems in practice, but I'm pretty sure ADRs evolved requiring padded dashes and minimum/maximum distances for headlights. I'm not sure if this affects you vehicle date though. If its a 6cyl, I don't think the factory did any production 6cyls with headlights in the grill either.

It will probably depend on the year - when the Series 3 was introduced there were almost no Australian Design Rules, by the end of Series 3 there was a whole book! So you almost certainly need the chassis date before this question can be answered. In practice, it is likely that with inspecting authorities not being very knowledgeable on change dates, you would get away with it - but that is no certainty. You might run into a stickler for the rules who is knowledgeable.

    Thanks for the replies.

I guess this reflects my primary concern.
The vehicle is (I believe) an amalgamation of a 1971 Series 3 and a 1968 Series 2a. I think the Series 3 chassis was from a 6 cylinder, but have been advised that the current 2286cc sits forward in the usual location, so presumably something clever has been done with the gearbox mounts.

The more I enquire the more of Chimera the vehicle seems to become

When did the six come in? 1969 was when the headlights moved out, but didn't the six come before that, because there was the NAS version with the bug-eye lights, and there were non - NAS versions produced at the same time as these?

Apparently the NAD market received the six first (in the form of the Westlake-head engine) in Summer 1966 as a 1967 model. I think it then appeared elsewhere in a low-compression version in May 1967. Bug-eye IIa's were around from late 1968, so presumably there were a few 6's about with headlights in the grill.

Actually a couple of the 4's I've come across in this configuration are converted 6's, although I can't recall if these were 1967/8 models or a later vehicle with a facelift.

    Around 1968?

    Hello from Brisbane.

Someone with more knowledge than myself will know the right dates for sure, but I seem to recall that the 109" 6 cylinder trucks with the in grille headlights first came out around 1968. I think the original 6s were sold in the light creamy/yellow colour while the 109" 4s were the original grey, both with the limestone wheels.

    Cheers,

Not sure John, I thought it coincided, but I'd take your word over mine.

They definately built 2a sixes with the lights in the grille as I have one in my driveway. This desn't help FireFish tho.

As the vehicle won't have an ADR compliance plate they may just let it go or they may look up the build date and expect it to meet the ADR's of that date. As others have said it mayl help if it is an earlier s3.

Depending on the age the lights and dash may be an issue and you may also need a windscreen demister
