So, I've been on the hunt again for 750/16's. Still like that idea better than going a 235/85/16. I've found these - Dunlop Road Gripper

Anyone used these or know much about them? They look ok IMO.
I think it's the Road Grippers in 7.50 x 16 that regularly turn up secondhand when they are taken off Troopy's.
I got a secondhand set from 'Melbourne's Cheapest Tyres' on Abbots Road, Dandenong. $90 each fitted some time ago. You need to go there in person to make sure you're happy about the amount of tread left.

The Dunlop grippers look okay, have you tried to get ex military tyres ??
Yeah, got a few ex mil tyres kicking about, but they are getting harder to find good ones that aren't ancient.

As my son will be driving it daily, I don't want ratty tyres - happy to pay or good ones.

Cool - shows they are out there. I'd want at least 80% tread on them, but I'll keep an eye out. Hadn't thought about the troopy owners offloading them. I work just around the corner from that tyre shop - I'll have to drop in for a look see...

    Cheers.

My Olympic Steeltrek 7.50's I purchased from Gumtree are going great. They are ex military stock and were practically brand new (still with tiny lugs on sidewalls) at $75 each, I am stocked!

And they are very wheel balanced. I fitted the tyres myself after stripping/painting and new tubes. No wheel vibration at all - even flat out at 90km/hour (no over drive!)

So, I've just called around for a price for new Road Grippers. Retail between $280 and $300 each. My mate who is a shop foreman at a tyre centre came in at $220 each, so just over $1K for the 5 I'll need, which isn't bad IMO.

I'll keep a look out for some near new steel treks as I think they look the part, or some very good second hand grippers.

I'm about 4 to 6 weeks away from purchasing them, so I'll keep you posted.

The grippers come with Toyos, they refer to them as "take offs" at the tyre shops near the toyo dealers where they send them to get the alloys and wider wheels put on. Go to the tyre shop close to your local toyo dealer, they will have the tyres with all the colour stripes and whiskers from the tyre mould still on them.

I got some before I went on a trip into the red centre for the Deefer, still on the car years later as it is not my daily driver. The tyres are a reasonable solid tyre but they are not anything special as tyre reviews will tell you, they are cheap.

Well, found a tyre centre that has a heap of brand new second hand grippers off toyo's. $200 each, which is pretty good, but they are in Wagga Wagga....

Looks like a road trip when my tax return comes back.

Here they are FOR SALE - Dunlop SP Road Gripper F 750r16 8 Ply Toyota/Nissan | Wheels, Tyres & Rims | Gumtree Australia Wagga Wagga City - Wagga Wagga 2650 | 1041208285

    Hi guys,

I am in the same situation. My 7.50R16LT (retreated) are not is a very good shape and the tend to lose pressure now and then..
I'm thinking to put 235 85 16 but afraid the size of the tires may affect the way the truck drives.
There is a seller on Ebay "intercolonial" which is offering the 265/75R16 (32" in high) wich is 2' wider than 235/85R16 for $85-$100 per tyre.

What should I do? Muddies or Grippers?

I would be wary of a wider tyre for a series as it may foul on the springs at full lock and reduce your turning circle. Muddies V Grippers - or and all terrain will depend on what you do most of the time with the vehicle. Mine will be a daily driver, that will see a bit of off road use, so the grippers will be fine for that.
