What size tyres? - 7.50 16 or 235/85?

Hi all

getting closer to getting my S3 cab chassis reading for rego. Brakes are all done and there has been heaps of cleaning up going on - new door tops, window seals, door seals etc.

Just down to a few oil leaks, fix the electrics, replace tie rods ends on the steering shaft and new tyres.

So...I currently have some lovely, rapidly perishing retreads that are 7.00 16 sized. But I notice that I should have 7.50 16, but can I run 235/85's?

They are interchangable, but don't mix them. The 235 is just a fraction wider.

Yep - 235/85's will work fine - I have them on my trailer as 750/16's are getting scarce. As mentioned, there is a small difference in them.

I'm sort of on the lookout for some 750/16's that look somewhat similar to the originals. There's a mob I Sydney importing some Chinese tyres that I think may be ok. I won't be doing a lot of KM on mine, so something cheap is fine for mine.

A couple of us have asked for some details of the supplier, but our questions seem to have fallen on deaf ears unfortunately.

Theses ones are 650/16's, but not sure if they are available in 700/16 or 750/16

Macks Tyre & Auto in Cooma was where some members were getting those sort of tyres from. I am not sure if he gets them regularly, or just happened to have a consignment at some stage.
He is a nice bloke so it wouldn't hurt to give him a ring. You will find him through Google.

I have some of the 750 16 that were disposed of by the Army because of they were past their use by date. I think they are nylon belted, not steel. If anyone one is after them I could be tempted to move them on.

I have the 7.50's on mine...they look better I think but the 235's are probably easier all round when replacing.

There have been some ex-army ones on ebay recently.

So, back to looking at tyres for the series 3. It was going to be a weekender but that's changed and it will be a daily driver for my Son. So, the cheap Chinese tyres I've been looking for are out, and something decent needs to be found.

So, I've been on the hunt again for 750/16's. Still like that idea better than going a 235/85/16. I've found these - Dunlop Road Gripper

Anyone used these or know much about them? They look ok IMO.

I put Michelin XZL's on mine as they really look the part

Very happy with them on and off road, only criticism would be that they are a hard tyre and don't do leaf spring suspension any favours

The Dunlop grippers look okay, have you tried to get ex military tyres ??
