    Alternator?

    Hello from Brisbane.

    A quick question on alternators.

A few months back one of my dopier acts was to attempt to put the battery back in my truck without glasses and the lights on under the house. Needless to say it went in back to front and reconnected accordingly. Several crackling noises and whiff of acrid smoke later I disconnected it.

Presumably the regulator or suchlike is fritzed. The motor is a 70s vintage 2.25l petrol.

My question - should I get it looked at for overhaul or simply seek out a new alternator? Following the latter route, what is the best option to replace it with - I am assuming that the original Lucas's went down with the ship.

Near originality matters, but I am open to something that will do the job but might also handle the sorts of extras that the 1970s designers might not have foreseen as common accessories.

    Cheers,

I would have the old one repaired.
It will only need a regulator kit, which you could do yourself.
    Have a look on ebay.
These alternators (Lucas 16ACR is standard-34amp) are still available or you could upgrade to a 20ACR (55amp) whick looks the same.
    Lots of options
    Regards,

    Phil
