Good morning.
10,000 trouble free klms.. Coming home, started coughing and spluttering. Lucky for me pulled into good friends driveway.
Checked everything. Opened up points to 16 thou, as they had worn a bit. Nice blue spark. Plugs a bit wet and black. He seems to be over Fueling via rebuilt Zenith.
Struggle to start. lots pf black smoke when does.
When shutting of fuel pours out the top tube, into the carby choke, with fuel then draining out bulkhead side of throttle spindle.
Trailer and Gilbert towed home by a big 150 Ford.
Sill strip down carby tomorrow, checking Needle and seat, as fuel seems to be siphoning.
Also will check larger 'O' ring for leakage.
What else should I be looking at.

Check that the faces of the top and body are flat, the tops have a tendency to warp a little and it doesn't seal around the gasket.

You could just fuel inject it and not have to worry about carburettors ever again .

Culprit ?
Stripped carby. All looked ok. Change needle valve to a good solid brass one.
Refitted. Fired straight up.

When the Leyland went to that type of Needle Valve in SU carbys we had a lot of trouble with them the rubber tip would get sticky & stick on the seat causing the float chamber to starve for fuel.

Sounds as if the rubber was fussy about the exact composition of the petrol - which varies according to where the crude oil came from, especially the amount of cyclic hydrocarbons such as benzol.
