Just put mine back together - just a note that when you're putting the upper and lower worm bearings together, don't do what the book says and start with the upper steering column bit - it's too hard to keep the load on it while putting the tube back over it - start with the bottom plate - put back the shims you took out for now, get the bottom bearing together, then do the top - you can then hold the bearings together while putting the tube back on. Once that's done, check your pre load and adjust the shims if nesesary. Mine was a tiny bit loose as I made a new gasket up which effects the preload, so I carefully took the bottom plate off again and took the thinnest shim out. Remember to use thread sealant on the top and bottom bolts as the threads run right into the main box cavity and you'll get leaks if you don't.

I just made up a couple of new gaskets.

And all back together, with a lick of paint. Feels smooth now and is adjusted just right I think.

I didn't get any photos of me putting it back together as I had grease all over my hands. All I replaced on this box was the sector shaft seal and a couple of gaskets. I regreased the top column bearing, and just cleaned all the gunk out of it, and reassembled. The sector shaft bush was in good condition in mine, but they can be bought easily if yours is worn and has any play in it. I hope this impromptu how to has been of some assistance.

This box was purchased second hand recently fom another member from here as my original has serious issues - it seized up half way through its travel - it may have had the same issue as yours, but I haven't stripped it down, I just got a decent second hand one and gave it a once over.

Let us know what you find when you do yours.

    Thanks.
Think your right, mine still has shaft fitted, but look, no balls. Not even the bearing cap.
    Not like yours anyway.
Wonder where the other balls went.

Ahhh, I think you may have found the issue - take the main cover off the box and see if there's a heap more in there - that's far easier than taking the end plates off - you may get away with flushing the balls out but the top bearing really needs replacing, which will mean a full strip down.

HBPicked up one of these for Gilbert.
Repco, cheaper than anything on line.
Glad to have a mate in shop
Nothing in box, regard wiring so he rang suppliers who are ???? No help.
Two wires to old 15AC Altenator so,
Three fixing posts on the new one, UNI POINT, LXA119 12v 65A.
P2 thick wire to Battery.( large nut and post, bottom.(+)
P1 wire to warning light ????(small nut and post, left.(IND)
P3 Tacho or ???? ( middle sized nut and post, top right(Aux+)
    Correct or other ideas.
Think COOP may have fitted one of these at some time, direct replacement for the old 15AC Lucas.
Also do they have one single bolt, or one on each bottom leg, to hold the bottom in place.
    Thanks.

Billy the warning light wire means the wire to the old alternator that becomes live when the key is turned to the on position.

    Alternator

    Alternator fitted.
    Had to reverse adjust bracket.
Will this cause a problem ?
2 belt change to suit, still will go down to a 75, 80 put bracket half way. 55 fitted to Bert.
pulley must be bigger on the new one.

    swapped bolt holes.
seems to be a better fit.
Bracket now on outside of Alternator, and full slot adjustment.
    Belt swap again.
Which do you think is correct ????
    Thanks
