Bugger.....Been away for the weekend and was hopping someone would have answered this post. Anyone recommend a garage or mechanic ? I think its only going to be me driving this.
Cheers Chris.
Any retired mechanics want a hobble? I bought my series 3, few years back and it had power steering on it. There was so much to do to bring it up to roadworthy standard, and the power steering was knackered so I took the easy way out and converted it back. The only thing left now is the double bottom pulley for the extra belt. I have done a search on the forum and spoken to a few people about it (Uncle Ho). So anyone local to me ( Bribie Island) that wants a bit of work putting power steering on my 88 Station wagon? Anyone near me that has one that I could come and have a looky? I have spoken to MR autos but they werent too keen taking on a big job like this, think it would be hundreds of dollars in labour. The thing is my wife wont drive it without the power steering. (dont bother me)
Cheers Chris
P.S. If someone wants to do it,I have a hoist at home that makes it a bit easier.

Lordrover,
Thats just it ,I don't have any of the bits left. Anyhow the bits were a sort of push pull ram that was leaking. I was thinking of doing it properly, like a disco or range rover power steering where you have to cut and reinforce the chassis.
Cheers Chris.
thats too big a job for me to squeeze in anytime before the next 8 months minimum.

Due to my being retired and living in Vic, the only assistance I can offer is advice .
To fit a disco/RR box would require drastic front crossmember altrations that QLD Transport will probably frown upon. if you have offset rims it is just possible to bolt a 60 series Toyota LandCruiser steering box to the outside of the cassis rail with a clamp on mounting plate that doesn't require cutting or welding the chassis in any way. I've done a few of these over the years. MR automotive should be able to make you up a draglink tube that takes a Toyota tierod end on one end. The column shaft can be made up from bits of old RangeRover and Toyota bolted together via a 'cotton reel' adaptor to avoid the need to have any shafts splined.
Putting the steering box outboard and eliminating the steering relay also makes room for an intercooler to sit beside the radiator should you wish to fit a TDI engine in the future.
Bill.
Oh well....Thanks guys, its in the 2 hard basket now. It will be just me driving it.
Cheers Chris.
