    Re Landrover

    Hi i have just purchased a few months back a series 3 Land rover LWB it has a Holden 186 fairy overdrive motor is in perfect condition was professionally fitted, it also has the hot water service where i can plug my shower head in and have a shower it runs off the engine,i have 2 problems with it, first i have to cut and weld a new rear cross member which is the best brand one to buy is it a big job to do, also where the rear leaf springs hook on to the 2 boxes each side the chassis i have to weld 2 new ones of those in which i have, is it a big job to do.any help would be great.

    It is a fairly big job if you haven't done it before!

    One point to watch, is if you are replacing the support for the back of the left spring, this has on it the chassis number (assuming it is Australian built), and you will need to have this in place to get it registered.

    The thing i need to weld on is the bulkhead outrigger i think that's what its called.

    The outriggers are pretty easy to do. Biggest job on both this and the rear crossmemember is getting everything lined up properly. The chassis steel is easy enough to weld with a MIG although I did do the rear outrigger on mine with an Arc welder without too much issue, but I did need to spend some time with a grinder to make it look pretty.

    On the pic below, the rear crossmember I did is closest to camera. The one behind that is the spring hanger - is that the one you need to do?


    As for the rear crossmember, there are a few people who do them - I've seen the Britpart one and it isn't bad, but there are other ones out there.

    It is good to have another new Series III owner posting. Do you have any photographs of your vehicle that you could post up?

    Hi Thank you for your help much appreciated, the one i have to do is right hand side bulkhead outrigger its a box type thing that's welded to the chassis and the rear of the leaf eye goes on to it.

    yes the one i have to do is a bit longer than yours

    also would it be a huge job to take the back part of the land rover so i could get to the chassis easier

    Is yours a wagon or tray back? The tray is quick and easy to remove, the wagon a bit more faffing around, but it is just a giant Meccano set at the end of the day. You will find a few rusted bolts that make the job a bit difficult, but nothing major.

    Unless it is a station wagon, you could do it in a morning - except that half or more of the bolts will be rusted solid. You will need two people to lift the tub.

    At the front it is bolted to the seat box, sills and the chassis underneath, at the back, and to the cab or hardtop if fitted.
