    Spare Wheel Bonnet Clamp Bolt

Can anyone tell me please , what size the spare wheel Bonnet clamp bolt is on a 74 109 ?

I can only see reference to the series 1 in the archives as 1/2 " BSF 4".

Is / was it the same for the series 3?
    cheers,

Yes, 1/2" BSF, but with a head to match the 26mm wheel nuts. Best of luck finding one! Second hand is the best bet.

You can get them new from Four Wheel Drives in Melbourne. They're pretty cheap.

Problem is that the 'pattern' ones from 4 Wheel Drives (or any of the other suppliers) are zinc passivated.
They don't look quite right and I'm not sure they'll last as long as an original without rusting.

So their suitability depends on what you're trying to achieve. For a scrubber like me who just wants his spare tyre bolted on, they're probably okay though the rust aspect suggests greasing the threads is a really good idea. For someone who is chasing originality, they might make a useful stop gap while searching for the real thing.

Are there any problems with driving around all the time with your spare on the bonnet? I know they used to do it that way so we'd be used to any drawbacks it might have (like buggering up your bonnet).

The only real drawbacks are the effect on forward vision and the weight to lift it. On both counts, I would not go above 7.50x16, and even with that tyre width avoid using it on a deluxe bonnet without the wheel well.

The bonnet will stand it without problems.

Thanks for the replies. Always gratefully received.

Its to drive , not to look at , so its all about the function , originality is not all that important to me in this instance. Every screw/ bolt going on, is going on with a dab of copper slip grease on the thread. I'm in two minds about putting the wheel back on the bonnet due to the weight issue but it takes up a lot of space on the flat tray. I might keep my options open. On the bonnet when I need the space in the back , in the back when I'm just popping out for some milk or taking the Mutt for a walk.

The important thing is that these nuts are something that are easily replaced if you find the right ones (at a decent price) or decide you do want originality. Not all decisions are that easy unfortunately.

As for carrying the spare. I've seen photos of Series Landys with the wheel in a well in the back. I'm not sure which Series that applies to (you can bet not my Series 1) or how hard the bodywork is to find, but it sounds like a good alernative.

I looked at the well but couldn't work out how the wheel would be anchored down. I'm assuming it just doesn't sit in it? I'll go take another look. I also thought about fixing it to the ute tray rear of the cab, but it fouled the rear view too much. Always good to have options. I do like the look of the spare wheel on the bonnet - but its pretty impractical.

The spare can be mounted behind the seats, there wasn't a well for it to fit into (early Series I's had a well and LWB's had the wheel mounted at the side in a well).

Picture here of the mount needed.

I made a temporary mount for my Series I when I went to Cooma in 2008, I thought the bonnet would be up all the time so decided to take the spare off the bonnet.
It's now back on the bonnet.
