Not knowing the vehicle I would suggest a bad earth
I haven't driven my Series three after dark for some time but recently I did and noticed some bizarre electrical problems.
Without the headlights or parkers on my indicators work fine with the direction indicator lights working as they should and corresponding with it's respective indicator.
However, when I turn the headlights on, I notice that the indicators still work correctly but if using the left indicators, the right direction indicator light on the dash flashes and vice versa. On using either the left or right indicator, the group instrumentation light (fuel gauge side) also flashes in sympathy of either indicator. I've also noticed that when not using either indicator with the head lights on, both direction indicator lights on the dash seem to have a dull glow and appear to be getting some power to them. Despite all this, the external indicators flash correctly and correspond with the direction I put the indicator stalk in.
Has anyone any idea what may be the cause of this? Is it just a bad earth somewhere or could it be the Voltage Stabiliser or something else.
Many thanks
Vince

x2 what he saidyou have a bad earth and the current is using any method available to find its way back to the battery. Remember, Think of electrical items as in the loop of a recirculating water/oil pump, what goes in has to find it way home in a timely manner for it to work, any blockage and you spring leaks!
Well thats a simple look anyway.
Cheers Scott
Probably a bad earth (or more than one). The various electrical circuits are earthed to convenient body or chassis parts, and the problem is that these are bolted together - bolted together joints tend to give less than perfect electrical connection. To find some of the problems, if you have a multimeter, check the voltage between the the battery negative and the earthed wire on both the headlights and blinkers, both with blinkers only and with headlights on - should be zero. My guess is that the bit of body the front lights are earthed to (from memory the radiator support) is not well earthed. This may also reflect that the engine/chassis connection is poor. Could also be the bulkhead to chassis connection. (or both)

Check earth on instrument's , earthing through other bulb in dash
Had similar problem with my SIII when at Alice Springs. Bad earth for the whole instrument panel was the problem. Certainly had me scratching my head for awhile...

I had a water level alarm fitted to my 110 a few years back. In the middle of nowhere in WA the alarm went off. Scared the daylight out of me. Water level ok and alarm stopped. It did this three times and I ended up disconnecting it and I had my eyes glued to the temp gauge all the way back to NSW. Turned out to be a bad earth in the dash.
