    Transfer case bearing

    Hi folks,
Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the front axle output shaft and bearing assembly from the transfer case without removing the entire transmission assembly from the vehicle?
I need to replace the bearing and seal at the front of the housing where it joins on to the front propellor shaft. (See pic). The bearing has to be removed by pressing it out from the inside of the housing.
    Cheers

The transfer case can be removed without removing the gearbox or seat box. It should be possible to remove the front output housing while leaving the rest of the transfer case in place, but may prove tight for access.

The seal can be changed easily enough but the bearing could be difficult. Getting the front housing off the transfer case while it is attached to the gearbox is hard as there is a bolt right in between it and the gearbox. Have a look at the manual for the procedure to remove the front housing, from memory it also requires the selector fork to be disconnected back in the main transfer case which would need the seat panel removed at least. Easiest might be to take the transfer case off the gearbox and work on it out of the vehicle.

    Cheers,

The seal is easy only six nuts the gasket was very glued, but the my bearing has some wear, I try put off but I can't, I think it must be done from inside of the transfer case

Actually you could probably get the bearing out by welding a couple of tabs to it that you could use a puller on. Getting the new one in should not be too difficult.

Thanks for all the great comments and suggestions folks. Will probably remove the transfer case from the gearbox as suggested, but will look at the tab idea as a possible alternative.

(Will post here after the procedure and let you know how it went).

Close examination of the problem today with much better light revealed that the flange is loose on the shaft, but that the shaft is firm in its bearing and there is no sign of any bearing roughness. So removing the housing probably won't be necessary. However, it looks like it would be possible- the only hitch might be the proximity to a chassis cross-member which might make removal of the housing tricky once the nuts are undone. But it should come out, although feasibility might also depend upon arrangement of components within the housing.
I note from the manual that the flange is fitted on splines and I'm wondering if I am going to need a new flange, or whether it will come up tight once the nut that holds it on is pulled up to the correct tension. I haven't removed the nut or taken the seal retainer off yet- still waiting for the parts to arrive and have to organise a cleanup of the surrounding area. Got on with other tasks today.
Can anyone comment on how the flange is held on?
    Cheers
