Dwell meter is for setting points. They usually have a tacho setting as well. Its more of a "feel" for me as im a mechanic but u can use a vac gauge to set mixtures as well. I use a timing light for the timing then i adjust the timing using the screw on the distributor plate for finer timing settings. As u adjust the timing the idle will go up or down. When u get the timing right then do final mixture and idle adjustments. Idle is always the last adjustment.

    Thanks again.
Had a play earlier, and the plug ran a nice grey colour with air cleaner removed. also the idle picked up. No black smoke when rev
I had changed the Air cleaner oil but the cleaner gauzes must need a clean, as its causing things to run rich.
I will soak it in petrol for a few days and try and clean it up.

Oil bath air cleaners are a drag on the airflow more so than a paper element so u need to adjust the mixture and idle with it connected. Oil bath aircleaners are better for older engines IMHO as i reckon they clean the air better. DONT overfill it.

I used one of these to measure the idle. I put in a 34ICH weber carb and the rpm's according to the stuff that came with the thing said to set it at 800-850rpm. A lot of people on here thought that was too high.
    cheers,

Yeah, try and get most cars to idle below about 750 RPM. The good old 2 1/4 idles smoothly so low its rediculous, but even with a roughish tune, you should be able to get it under 600.

Hi mate, some things are going well and some more slowly.

The 101 is doing fine and got a good going over before Corowa, the RRC is going ok, but needs a new stepper motor to make it idle properly, the L322 is waiting to get a polish and go on the market to make room for a 4x4 Perentie. .

Cams Series 3 is still going nowhere fast though...

    S**t,
    HoHars hitting my 'SECRET' stash.
    Will anything be left ????
You will drive past me, but no, not around, out in tents with 60 grade 8's for the night.
Will have to drive to Logan for a visit one day, or raid Marshall's one weekend.
Don't take any good series 3 firewalls please, or let me know where you see one hiding in the yard.
    One day won't be enough.
Did you talk to Barry, Charlie, or Jimmy.
Watch out for snakes amongst the long grass.

We were there last week to sus what we are bringing home. Everything is going to scrap after we pick the best bits out. The Shed should be good for parts. Not sure who is there now, Barry seems long gone, a young bloke has been dealing with us. There is only 1 vehicle that looks good for a firewall, so will be coming home, a 2a. All the others are rust buckets. Sad really. That is where my ex-mill 2a came from many years ago.
