Hi Dark, that washer is what seals the bottom of the oil filter. There should also be a spring in the bottom of the oil filter housing that the washer sits on top of. So it is assembled in this order... bolt, thick steel washer, rubber seal, oil filter housing, inside spring, that washer, oil filter cartridge, then square section o ring seal fits into the alloy housing without being twisted, then lube the o ring and the top of the oil filter housing with a bit of clean oil, screw the assembled oil filter housing into the alloy housing ensuring the top is seated into the o ring and tighten up but dont overtighten or you will break it or damage the o ring seal. Fill enging with 20 w 50 oil and start and check for leaks. If it leaks then loosen it a bit and give it a slight twist and retighten. If it leaks a lot youve done something wrong.

There was no spring. Poo - I'm always missing something! I can't see it in the parts catalogue. Do you know what the part number for the spring is please?

It seems from looking at the parts catalogues i have that the oil filter housing comes as an assembly so the parts are not available seperatly. I would maybe contact the ho hars for the bits that are missing or a complete assembly. Without the spring to hold the washer up onto the bottom of the filter then the oil is just not getting filtered as the washer seals the bottom of the filter forcing the oil to go through it and then back into the engine. Otherwise the oil is just bypassing the filter. Hope this helps.

Cant you get an adapter for an normal oil filter? Asking as I fitted an adapter to a troopy hj45 years ago, one of the best mods I did, it made oil changes cleaner and easier.

Blimey! - the filter was dated 2011. Might have gone in later of course but wouldn't surprise me if it was 5 years old - and not filtering all that time! Thanks for the Ho-Hars suggestion. I'll take a look in the shed first and see if I can find anything that might do.


I like the look of that adaptor. That's going on the list. It sold itself when it said "avoid dumping dirty oil all over the engine" which is exactly what happened when the casing came off. I positioned the bowl to catch it and it went entirely in the opposite direction!

The problem with the old type is you think it is sealed and start her up and oil goes all over the place. With the mod oil changes are simple without the bother.

I was looking at the same thing a couple of years go, and I remember being told that the oil filter mounting bracket could be unbolted from the block and directly replaced with the mounting from the first engine that used aq cartridge filter: was it from the County? I can't remember, sorry.

I did look it up on ebay though, and someone from the US was selling the bolt-on cartridge mounting bracket. I just had another look, but I can't find one, alas. I found this one for a more recent engine, but this seller might help with an email.
