My 88" Series 3

Finished stripping the engine down today, (well apart from removing the pistons and crank). Sump was a right pig to get off due to the lashings of silicone

Looks like I'll be replacing the bumpy stick, the hardening has started to go on some of the lobes

The engine is stripped enough to go off to get machined. Next job is the gear box and transfer box.

Hand brake shoes don't look so great :)

I now have many hours at the parts cleaner ahead of me :( Dishwasher powder doesn't attack aluminium does it? :angel:

Yes. The effectiveness of dishwasher powder is due to its content of alkaline materials, and these attack aluminium, as anyone who has run aluminium saucepans through the dishwasher can testify. (I suspect your smiley implies you know this! Or was that to imply that you would not dream of running car parts through the kitchen dishwasher? Quite effective, but don't use it on aluminium, and use care with steel parts that have bearing surfaces, as rust can set in very quickly once degreased.)

I do recall something about dishwashing powder attacking aluminium, thanks for the confirmation... and I may have used the dishwasher in the past to clean car parts :)

I use the dishwasher for some parts - not aluminium and not when SWMBO is home. :angel:

There is no current SWMBO at the moment, so I'm safe on that front Homestar :)

Spent the day cleaning, and cleaning, and cleaning. Not to much in the way of pictures, but the cases came up nice:

Wow, they can up great! How did you clean them? I was going to send a heap of stuff off to the hydro blasters, but if I can get results like that at home, I'd be very happy.

Cleaning process was:

Scrape the big bits off
Pressure wash
Scrub in parts cleaner
Pressure wash
Bead blast (with glass beads while staying away from any bearing and mating surfaces)
Pressure wash (to remove any stray blasting media)
Degrease with BrakeCleaner and blow down with compressed air

Very satisfying at the end, but took all flippin day!

Had a bit of a clean up today, tools seem to walk around the place, and things get in a mess when you turn your back! :angel:

I dug this little sand blaster out the other day, to try a little soda blasting, when I was looking for my 3/8" torque wrench, (I don't really like to use it cause the graduation system makes no sense to me what so ever!).

Does a really good job, chews through the soda powder though. It's not nearly aggressive as the glass bead, so only really any good for bringing the colour back into the aluminium, or when you're worried about damaging a machined surface.

I also stripped the PDWA valve. The spindle was well and truly stuck in there with gunk, and the microswitch is jammed in the up position.

The spindle came out with some gently tapping after soaking the unit in brakeclean for a couple of hours.

The second bush was a right pig to get out, the hole on the end is offset , but only just enough to catch the bush with the smallest pin punch I have.


All the bits cleaned up, I need to get some new O-Rings and a new switch. I'll probably turn the old switch into a locking pin to hold the spindle while bleeding the brakes.
