Most inspectors will call a forward facing white light a driving lamp.
Not the ones I have seen.
And they got through a roadworthy.

Admittedly they were Victorian vehicles but it is rather easy to tell the difference between a diving lamp and a work light.

    thanks all,

this is the extent of the research I got to:

    http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/-/media/Sa...G240.pdf?la=en

I'd certainly call it a work lamp, as the switch is on the lamp itself, and I couldn't reach it whilst driving, and would never use when driving on road anyhow.

    From the above doc:

A lamp for the temporary purpose of reading signs, examining and/or making adjustments or repairs to the vehicle and /or managing its load (e.g. search lamp or work light) can be used, provided:
The vehicle is stationary and the light is being used for making adjustments or repairs to a vehicle, or being used in an ?off road? situation, or
the light is used temporarily to read a house number or notice board.

Sounds like my use case... so it'd classify it as a work lamp, not a driving lamp..

However, I can't find any docs regarding mounting location for work lamps

WA docs that tombie posted the other day state that work lamps cannot face forwards.
You may be ok, but if a cop wants to pick on you or you drive interstate it could be an issue.

    Ah, yes.

    A few key words here

LED light bars used as work lights that are permanantly mounted facing forward are not permitted.

"Permanantly" and "LED light bar" clearly do not apply in this case.
