    It is not poling badly, but there are marks that could show it is just touching.

    Try oiling it, but be careful not to go overboard at the commutator end - brushes don't like oil.

    While you have it apart, ensure the spiral for the pinion is moving freely - add graphite, but do not oil or grease.

    If it is already greasy clean if off with some solvent before adding the graphite.
    You can get small bottles of graphite powder from Bunnings, otherwise some emery paper & a pencil (grey lead).

    Had some brushes hanging about the shed so replaced those and oiled the bushes and put some graphite on the spiral. Getting 9. 2v now when running . Tempted to put it back on and see how it goes whilst saving up for a new one - it sounds and feels much better - i have the option of starting it on the handle if I get into trouble. Made a mental note to get a more powerful soldering iron as struggled getting the two fixed brushes back on. Thanks for everybodys help.
