Pattern ones are available, not cheap and unsure of the quality.
There was talk of using one available for tractors but I don't know if anyone had any success.

    What's the symptoms ?

Easy to fit bushes, replace brushes & skim commutator so unless it's something major it's probably best to repair rather than purchase a poor quality aftermarket/pattern one.

Agreed. The things were built to last. The biggest problem would be sourcing a drive, but I'll bet there are some around.

BTW, on that, Colin did you ever get back to Fred's? He'd have one.

    $350 for **itpart !!
    Land Rover Parts - STARTER MOTOR - S1 (1954 onwards) & S2/2A/3 petrol 4 & 6 cylinder

Maybe look for a s/h one if yours isn't repairable.

$350 should see a rebuilt original and spare change with the right know how. It's only the drive that worries me, and I can't remember if they are the throw type or Bendix. If Bendix it should be even easier.

I'm not too sure what you mean, as the term Bendix is used for any type of starter drive, and the "throw type" could mean either an inertial engagement or a solenoid engagement.

The Series petrol starter used a Lucas inertial engagement - the pinion is on a twisted spline and the starting of the shaft moves it along this against a light spring. A heavy spring reduces the shock load as it engages the flywheel ring gear.

Most common reason for a totally dead starter (when it is not a faulty connection) is brushes if there is no current draw, and bushes if there is heavy current draw. If it spins with no engagement it is almost certainly just a sticky spline but could be a broken large spring, or rarely other problems.

    Thanks for the responses.

    Somewhat confused.

In town last week , wouldnt start. Got out fiddled with various wires dissy etc ,noticed live to starter motor a bit floppy doppy, got in and started fine.
Got home parked up and tightened and cleaned everything. Volts accross Solenoid ok. Some days later , went to start it and no go. Just the click from the Solenoid. Hooked up battery straight to starter motor and nothing, so suspected starter motor. Dropped starter motor out and put it on the bench and it spins fine. Went back to truck , put meter on starter motor wires at sm end and i have 12+ volts so confused. Yet to look into sm so maybe something came lose?
Apologies if fault finding a bit random.
    Any ideas?
    cheers,
    D

40 year old memories, John. I recalled that the one that you call the Lucas inertia type as Bendix.
