Thread: Tyre Choice

It’s been suggested to me that using 7.50 x 16 tyres is the best option for my SWB S3, in order to give me a few extra Km/h.
I haven’t yet found any 7.50 x 16 tyres that are for a passenger vehicle (not light truck), and give low road noise when on-road driving.
The wheels on my S3 SWB are 231601 5" rims, fitted with very unroadworthy 205R61C Bridgestone Duelers and tubes.

My local tyre shop suggested 205R16C Maxxis AT700. Does anyone have any experience with these tyres or suggestions for 7.50 x 16 tyres ?

I did try to find some suggestions by searching the forum, but couldn’t see anything.

'74 S3 SWB Cab

Hello. It really depends what you are doing with your Series 3… We are (slowly) building up our Series 2 SWB, and it has 130 rims on it, that I sourced years ago. These have 750/16 tyres fitted. Two are Bridgestones and the other two are Michelin XZL’s which are a great tyre but expensive. I did find a cheaper alternative to the Michelin’s in the form of a Hifly HH301 750/16. It’s still a light truck tyre, but they are quiet on the road, wear well and will give you that extra 15kmh… so long as the engine is fit and healthy and will pull the taller gearing. We’ve stuck with a light truck tyre as, a) it’s what we have, but b) a light truck tyre will handle a lot more of a flogging on remote dirt roads (somewhere our little SWB will see on the A Frame behind our overland truck eventually). If you want a similar sized tyre but that is more suited to general work with light off roading, look to a 235/85 R16. Plenty of All Terrain choice with this size. Google images is handy for seeing what certain tyres look like on certain vehicles… We saw this great little Series 3 SWB at our friendly Land Rover parts supplier in Adelaide a few days ago. It has 235/85 R16’s on it. 😊
