    SIII 109 with 3.5 V8 / LT77 5spd

    Hi all,

    I’ve got a SIII 109 I’m restoring. Chassis was previously modified for a Holden 186, I plan to install a Rover 3.5 V8 & LT77 into it from a 1986 RR Classic.

The SIII was a farm car and has various other bits welded on. I’d like to cut off all the useless bits, and weld on new brackets before giving it a proper clean up and respray.

Does anyone have an image of a suitably modified SIII chassis to support the 3.5 & LT77?

Other mods will include converting it from flat tray to tub, and putting in the S2 dash.

edited to add pics of engine, trans, donor car and chassis

    Hi,
I don't have an answer to your picture question.

Are you aware that all full-time 4WD 110s, Defenders, Range Rovers, Discos and S III Stage 1, have CV joints in the steering knuckles, part time 4WD Series vehicles had uni joints.
I don't know what effect this has in real life.

Was the change in dash just a cosmetic thing, our was it a compliance thing for a padded dash?

All the best with your project.

Thanks for the info. I’m planning on using the existing steering and diffs from the S3 in the project etc. That’s an interesting point though. I might need to install locking hubs to disconnect the front axle.

Dash change to the S2 is for cosmetic reasons.

I assume you will use the transfer case out of the Rangy.
The LT 230 is full time 4WD, so you can't run free wheel hubs
There are part time kits available.

The comment about the dash is that if the SIII dash is required for compliance then that will stop you getting the engine conversion engineered, which you need to register it.

Talk to your engineer before you start.

ADR 21 came into force on Jan 1, 1973. Crash padded dash was a part of that one.

This is my rundown on putting a V8 LT95, and then V8/ZF/LT230 into a Series2 chassis. The V8/LT95 and V8/ZF/LT230 all use exactly the same chassis engine and gearbox mounts. It will be much the same as what you're looking at. To be honest, it will be far better to just start with a Stage 1 chassis.

For the IIa firewall, look for the 6cyl variation for better engine clearance, however the Stage1 firewall, floors, tunnel and seat box is actually what you're after so that they clear the engine and transmission without hacking. You might find 110 County or Defender ones work as well. Also, you cant properly fit a long bonnet to a 2a firewall, unless you change the hinges on the firewall.

This is really helpful. Are there drawings / blueprints of S3 109 chassis available somewhere so I can get a feel of the differences between the Stage 1 and normal chassis?

This is Series II, but I don't think its too different from a Series III 109 (non-stage 1)

I've got a Stage 1 chassis in the grass. I can pull it out and take some pics if you need to see the differences also. Although they're both 109 chassis, they're pretty different.

That would be incredibly helpful if you didn’t mind.

Here we are, dragged it out!

You can see the Stage 1 chassis is really more like a Leaf sprung County chassis than it is to the Series 109 chassis. the Xmembers are totally different to the 109. When I did my V8 conversion, all of the Xmembers in the front half of the chassis (except under the gearbox) were cut out.

In these pics, the Coil chassis is obviuously the County chassis and the leaf sprung chassis is a Stage 1 chassis.

btw, If anybody wants a Stage 1 V8 chassis, then they can come and pick this one up. I don't think it will be usable for registration as I've noted rust in the main chassis rails near the forward rear suspension mounts. I'm keeping the County coil chassis.
