I miss read the post... I read it as "you cant do it unless you have the extractors"

thats why I put the bit about the first bit of the exhaust following the standard path.

although I have seen a set of custom made extractors on a petrol 2.25 that tilted forwards on all of the ports and then curved back under the starter so you could still get easy access to the clutch slave and the starter.

whered you get your diesel extractors made up?

They were a stock Lukey part. Cost $140. Not sure if they still make them.

I use a 3/8th drive socket set but a set of narrow 1/2 inch should work...

having just done the job I remembered a pertinent fact about the sockets.....

you need a 5/8th inch 3/8th drive socket thats ground down in height to get clearance on the casting for the cooling system welch plug.

Fortunately I had mine in my gash tools box so this presented no problem....

for the sake of "how would you do it without butchered tools I put the new starter back in without it and you need a 5/8th open ender to start with and its a case of tighten 1/12th of a turn, remove the spanner and turn it put it back on and tighten a further 1/12th of a turn and repeat and repeat and repeat and you get the idea. when it seats grab the 5/8th ringy and nip it up.

my sidcrhome ring open ender as too fat on the ringy end to get the clearance on the same casting protrusion to work without cross threading the bolt.
