Changing Firewalls/bulkhead

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy my first Landy and have had a look at a local series 3 which is for sale. The chassis looks good, it has an 2.25 in it, I'm not sure about the gearbox, drivetrain, breaks etc as i have not had a chance to take it for a test drive yet. The problem is that there is a fair bit of rust in the bulkhead. I was wondering how much work there is involved in changing the bulkhead. My father and I are reasonably mechanically minded and between the two of us we can spraypaint, weld and swing a spanner. I am under the belief that practically all body panels are bolted to the Bulkhead, hence they would have to be removed to replace the bulkhead and are the footwells welded to the bulkhead or are they one piece.

You are right - a lot of panels are bolted to the bulkhead - floor, transmission tunnel, doors, bonnet mudguards, windscreen. But all these are fairly easy to remove. The real problem with replacing the bulkhead is that all the wiring, the dashboard, steering, pedal assemblies, all the controls except the handbrake are attached to it. Nothing difficult, except for rusted up bolts, just that there is a lot of it.

The footwells are part of the bulkhead.

Thanks allot John, well in that light, does anyone have a series 3 109 bulkhead for sale in the south coast region

It would sure help matters if we knew which South coast you were referring to and confirm whether you need a SIII 4 cyl firewall. This is because the SIII 4cyl, SIII 6 cyl, SIII V8 or SIII Isuzu as they are all different and it is sometimes the case that 6 cyl engines were replaced with 2.25 litre ones etc.

Sorry, I'm talking about South Coast of NSW. It is a sIII 4 cylinder petrol
