    Are huge tyres worth it?

    To sum up the events leading to the pinnacle of today:

    Man1 buys old LWB Series 3 for $300, paints for $20 with acrylic fence paint, changes oils $80. Total $400

    Man2 buys Nissan GQ for $5500, gets all new suspension and 4" lift for $2000 gets 35" Mickey-T mud tyres and rims to suit for $2000. Total $9500

    Man1 and Man2 attend same BBQ. Man1 parks on edge of kerb, Man2 shouts out "that's about as far as you can take that old thing off road isn't it?" Man1 laughs and says "probably, we'll have to go 4wding together sometime, I could use you to pull me out with your huge tyres when my "old thing" get's stuck in the mud with it's little bar treads".

    One or two drinks later. Man2 "how about we go 4wding this afternoon, I know some good muddy tracks. Man1 (reluctantly) "OK".

    Well as for the result. The "old thing" sunk down in a track, Man1 and his wife got out engaged 4wd, rocked back and forth and pulled out. The Nissan didn't... It just sat there and dug down to it's rear axlle. Man2 tries in vain to get out, but the moment comes when he asks Man1 to use his "old thing" to pull him out.

    One broken snatch strap (the worst condition I have ever seen) then tied it togethor for another tug and finally out came the Nissan.

    Man1 looking at Nissan pulled out of the mud. "geesus those tyres of yours sure look impressive filled with mud."

    Man2 (BROKEN) "didn't help me much though"

    Man1 "come on man, it's probably just because I went through first and dug it up."

    Man2 "I don't think so, I went alongside your tracks"

    So my question is, are 35" mud tyres really worth their weight in gold? What did the Military know that made them choose to use bar treads?

    what can you say series landys are far superior

    and you can get 35' with bar tread

    i love my 35 on the cruser but they suck bucket loads of power in the mud and sand

    there is some thing in all that. i went from 35 265 to 31 245 to many punchers with the bigger rubber.

    then a couple of weeks ago Robe - Beach port. me isuzu on 31" 245 and a 200tdi 110 on a 1\2 zillion inch biscuits, i had to take a couple of bites at a few places, he never did all day.

    An interesting account, and certainly bar tread tyres are more effective in mud than most other tread types. And tyre size is much less important than most people seem to think. The most important factor in tyre type is overall diameter and ground clearance.

    But more important than any of these, are driving technique, tyre pressure and overall vehicle weight, and I suspect one or more of these may have been the decider(s) in this case.

    If that mud was another two feet deeper this story would have no relevance
    I go 4x4ing with mates that have 37 and 38 in tyres and Ive got 32s and I get stuck all through the deep mud where they walk through

    Oh, I love stories like this! Top report TJ!

    In all my years of driving army 2A's around the baby poo at Northam, I only got stuck once when the front wheel hit a submerged rock and then it freed itself simply by driving out backwards and having another go.

    What I knew about off-road driving wasn't and still isn't much (the tyres were always left inflated to road pressures for example). I put it down to the Olympic Trojan bar treads and a very good car
