    They are Olympic Trojan bar treads I'm using. You know I've been thinking about the whole event and it seems surreal now. It seems we both got stuck, but where as I was able to rock back and forth and slowly dig my way out, when he tried to rock he just dug down instead. It probably would have been rude, but I would like to have gotten in his car and had a go.

    your story sounds like it comes down to driving style, i know for a fact that i go alot further on 37s then i ever did on the old 32s, and as someone else has said about there truck on bigger tyres, my truck usualy walks through all the muddy rutted sections with minimal wheel spin or trouble where as everyone else on smaller tyres get hung up on there diffs and make a mess of the track.

    It also comes down to Terrain, mud and ruts big tyres are great, sand big tyres are great as long as you have enough power to push them - my county never has any trouble on the sand as im sure those from the forum who have driven with me on the beach will know, on the rocks its nice to get the clearance from the bigger tyres but sometimes it seems they dont bite as well as my old 265s i had in the same tread/make, and as for touring i wouldnt bother any bigger then 32-33's

    BTW the patrol diffs are a pretty big problem for muddy ruts, the diff pumpkins are huge, ive driven areas on 32s in my disco that patrols on 35s got hung up on there diffs on,, thats one of the reasons patrol drivers like there huge tyres

    I think you've nailed it on the head. We got dug down pretty deep, but our diff didn't leave any marks, the patrol left a big rear diff footprint in the road between the ruts where the harder surface was still intact, you could see where it had just been sitting on it and I remember noticing the big footprint at the time.

    In theory even though it looks really high off the ground the Patrols 4" lift wouldn't lift the diff off the ground any more. The 35" tyres would end up lifting it only 1 and a half inches higher off the ground than the 32's? So if the Landy diff was higher in the first place....

    Another thing, the Patrol's diff is in the centre if I remember right? The Landy's diff is offset and not on the peak of the crown of the track.

    Also consider the rear diff pumkin is in the centre on a patrol where as rovers are offset to the drivers side, the salisbury diffs are pretty damn big as well, but yours may have avoided the worst bit by being offset, rover diffs give about 1.5in more clearance then a patrol diff i think.

    Great story - and heard similar before. As mentioned, driving technique may be the difference. (Tyre pressure?)

    To be honest though, I have seen a friends Landcruiser comp truck - you name it he's got it and it has enromous rubber running at 0 psi.(He takes the valves out) - It would leave me and my 7.50x16's for dead. But geez he must spend 20 times what I do on our "common" hobby.

    I think the military also think about reliability, flexability, durability, multi purpose, cost, standardised fleets etc...

    compare two identical type of tyre in different sizes on identical cars and you may have the start of an interesting discussion point

    Bar tread modern equivalent is a Simex

    available in different sizes (even 7.50)

    Compare some, get definitive and consistent proof (not just a one off) and then post a thread like this

    Otherwise it's just like the Nazi, Toyota, Greenie, Roothy or any other propaganda machine
