    More silly questions

Technically, is a Stage 1 (in this case the V8 variant) a Series 3 or an independant model release prior to the County ??.

I have found a very clean V8 3 door and the owner states it is a Series 3. It looks very original and does have a flush front (grill and gaurds).

    Paul

P.S. No rust, very straight, clean interior, RWC and strong 3.5lt. anyone want to guess a value for me ??

    Hi Paul.

As far as my (limited) knowledge goes, yes it it. It still is leaf sprung, and sits on a 109 chassis. The grill is moved forward to accomodate a different engine, but everything else (interior etc) is series 3.

As for price, IME they vary wildly from example to example so is hard to say

Yes, a Stage 1 is a Series 3. In fact the term "Stage 1" is not official in any way, as far as I am aware. It is an internal Leyland name for the first stage of funding to revive Landrover, the tangible product being the V8 Series 3. The V8 necessitated some major changes to the Series 3, particularly the drive train, as the V8 used the existing LT 95 gearbox which had been developed for the Rangerover and the 101 gun tractor. This drive train and engine also meant changing the diff ratio to the same as the Rangerover (3.54) and converting the front axle to full time four wheel drive. The steering setup was also modified, probably so that the V8 could fit more easily, and the grille was moved forward to the front of the mudguards.

However, apart from these changes and minor differences in trim, the Stage 1 is identical to the six cylinder Series 3. The Isuzu engined variant was a purely Australian model and was mainly intended to provide JRA with experience in the engine which was planned to be used in the Perentie, already at the design stage. (plus of course to provide some competition for Toyota who now had a reasonable sized diesel in the Landcruiser).

Yes the stage one V8 is a strange beast, I really have no idea how much they would be worth. I know I paid too much for mine, at $1500. But then I did drive it 400+ks home, without event. After a full rebuild, about $6000 worth, it's my every day car for work and play, and has clocked up thousands of ks, with only problems I cause myself. My thought is, if the engine isn't rebuilt, it's worn out, even if it still runs fine, I just wouldn't take the risk of break down, not out here. Every rubber pipe should be replaced to, as well as all critical wires. I think they are the ultimate series 3, tougher, faster, heaps more power with a better gearbox and this makes them more comfortable to drive, and they still look and are as basic as an s3. Parts are cheap and available, if you don’t want to buy it, tell me how much. I’m toying with the idear of building a strictly off road one. You can check out a couple of videos I posted on YouTube, type CQLDUTEDRIVER, into YouTube’s search thing. Here’s a couple of photo’s of my beast.

    That's a nice tidy Stage 1.

Just a note - a genuine stage 1 has a different (moved forward) front crossmember to the standard series III chassis.
