I would check state legislation - in NSW at least for a few years now they have not been allowed to use irrelevant facts to avoid paying - in other words, they could use the fact that the bolt was the wrong material only if it broke. On the other hand if the ADRs specify the material, you could be booked for this (sounds improbable though!), and technically the vehicle would be unroadworthy, which would give the insurer an out - but in this state at least I doubt it would stand up in the eyes of the insurance ombudsman let alone in court.

My point is you need to check with the state motoring department in WA, not the insurer. I have always avoided worrying about the problem by using the bolts that came with various vehicles - as I said earlier the size is standard.
