Thread: Rear Door Spare wheel Carrier

theres a couple of options to carry the spare...

1. grab an old stub axle and bearing assembly complete then bolt that to a plate on the back of the framework. This means you always have a ready to go stub axle bearing and hub assembly if you need it, Lock the wheel in place by means of rubber capped extention piece that presses lightly into the lettering of the wheel or side of the tread when you tighten up the wheel nuts.

2. Grab door mount carrier from a D1,D2 Defender and some counties cut it down and weld it on in place of your plate with studs, this will off set the wheel to the correct position so it doesnt foul on your barwork. (it also leaves room for a small primus gas bottle rejigged with a 12v aircompressor and outlet)

Ive also seen a 3rd bar added about 2 inches from the swing mount that has a set of hooks and an extendable bar mounted from it. The hooks are just convenient hanging points for bags, swags and bins and the extendable bar carries a work light and cb antenna mount.

thanx dave yeah i mite put another bar in yet.with some hooks .thinking bout another work light on an extending pole..

Made the top & bottom brackets today ,i did already have a top one but i didnt like it the metal was to flimzy..
this is the top one..






this will be a side piece for extra surport , i think i mite make this bit bigger.



this is roughly where it will be bolted on to the car ,the side piece wont be welded till i have the carrier cut to length..



This will be the bottom one.





this is where the bottom one will be on the car.





Again the side pieces wont be welded on till the carrier is cut to the right length..They both need to be trimed up they will be ronded on the front edge to match the bush...
when i get some bushes i will put some more pics up hopefuly this week..
just have to get the plate to go between the uprights, i have the pipe & some plate for the wheel to atach to...
Then i can sand blast them & paint them & fit it all up..

A little bit more work done cut to lenghth & welded the pipe on the ends for the bushes.







Welded the plate in that will hold the pipe & plate for the wheel..



now the pipe & plate,need to get wheel studs.







got the bushes i cut them to size this mornin pics when i get ..
my welds arent the prettiest but they clean up ok & i havent hade anything of made break or fall off yet so it cant be to bad..

Judging by the hammer in a few pics you are welding with a stick welder. Just for that you get my vote! I have a mig welder these days, so much easier!

Why make up a wheel carrier when there is a genuine carrier available for series 3s that goes on the rear door. I think the Games and other station wagons had them as standard.

Thanx bigjohn yep stick welding,i do have a mig it a little live wire gasless very old one i seem to weld beter with the stick ,cant seem to see very good when using the mig some times i weld great with the mig some times i should just give up.always weld ok with the stick though..dont know one day i will work that mig out & be good all the time,,

i dont want the wait just on the door as they crack,,plus i dont have the money to buy one even if they are cheap i only paid for the bushes & got then cheap all the metal came from scrap bins on weekends ...
i wish i could buy one then i wouldnt have to do all the welding..
