yes you can, the only thing you need to get worried about is the chassis number being obscured as part of the process.

So just tack weld a piece of flat bar over the number and knock it off when I clean up the gal dags .

I will have to get on with it now

    and problem solved.....

the couple of chassis dips I was involved in in townsville (jeeps, boo) the 2 guys bought the engineer who was signing off on the chassis mods out to do the final inspection of the chassis onsite. chassis tied to dipping frame, numbers checked, dipping commences, frame removed and stored, 20 minutes later number punches come out, plates get engraved, stat dec signed cash, beer and hand shakes. Done.

We are in a similar boat with our restoration. We will have to cut off and remake everything aft of the red line on the chassis drawing. The only problem is that the chassis number is on the rear spring hanger.

Bearing in mind that we have photos of the stamped number on the damaged chassis, what other means do we have to conserve the original chassis number stamping?

If you are using elements from a donor chassis it will have a number already and removing it to re-stamp your original number when you replace the rear end could end up with problems.

Ideally cut out the original spring hanger bracket and re-use it.

I don't know how bad the rust is at that point, but you may get away with retaining the outer side plate from the spring shackle bracket forward and replacing the top, bottom and inner plate.

Remember you should be cutting the plates on an angle (rather than vertical) and doing the opposite angle on the other side of each rail.

Also before you cut and remove anything you should make up a gig to locate all the various points in relation to the rest of the chassis. Then you can bolt the replacement part/s in place to make the welds.

Another option for your number is to stamp the number into the UK location on the RHS front spring hanger. There is nothing illegal in stamping the original number in additional locations.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

No need even to do that. In the unlikely event you can't read it after galvanizing a quick touch up with a wire wheel will have it legible again.
