    Fairey Overdrive rebuild

Hi guys, I'm after some information on reassembling my overdrive.
I have stripped and cleaned it and sourced all new bearings and seals. The gears are fine.
When I reassemble what end float should there be on the shafts? I have new shims to get it right.
Also do I need to grease the bearings or just coat everything with EP90 as I put it back together?
    Thanks

The only information I have on shims is to use the same ones that were taken out!

Do not use grease in the overdrive, but oil everything with EP90 as you assemble it. This ensures initial lubrication as well as helping assembly.

The splines engaging the output dog on the gearbox should be greased with plenty of MoS2 grease as these do not get adequate lubrication and will ultimately wear and fail.

Only use grease on the seals. Rover Down South say all endfloat in the unit should be between 0.05 and 0.1mm. The endfloat can only be measured (guessed) once the rear cover has been bolted to the unit.
I just repaired a Toro using a Fairey Repair And Service Manual. Did a 400km test drive yesterday up and down the M1. No problems. .W.

    Thanks guys.

It had no shims on the layshaft at all and a dry fit indicates a fair bit of float. More than what I would think is ok so the info is greatly appreciated.

If there is too much end float the synchro won't work and there is a chance that some of the small rollers in the thrust bearings manage to escape. .W.

    Finally got it back together.

Wasn't a hard job once I gathered the bits together.

I got the case from a fellow forum member as mine had been helicoiled. It was not a good job and when this case came up it seemed like a good time to rebuild it.The bearings came from the UK, I was there on holidays a few months back. The circlips and shims came from Rovers Down South in the US. When I stripped it, it had no shims, and with a new case I needed them. Couldn't find the shims locally anywhere. Kept getting stuffed about so I had to go overseas. I was told they could be made but after endless waiting, and wanting to get it together, I took a hit to the pocket in shipping...

Feels nice a tight so hopefully she runs quiet when I get her back in. As quiet as they can be anyway

Got it back in the vehicle.

Run quiet in 1:1 drive, then when it goes into over drive it has a bit of a mild scream when you let the foot off

Didn't start off like it but as it warmed up it got louder.

I'm thinking it's the clutch sleeve bearing. In 1:1 this doesn't rotate. It OD it does.

I took the inspection plate off the gearbox and dribbled some oil in the holes in the output shaft to lube the clutch sleeve bearing while it was stopped. Then it ran quiet for a about 30 seconds in OD. Until the oil threw out I guess.

The clutch sleeve bearing is new and I smeared it all over with anti seize grease when fitting the OD.

I'm thinking I'm going to pull it back and grease the clutch sleeve and teeth to death. I don't think I have put enough in, and looking at it I don't think that space gets much lubrication if any in operation.
