Look for something that's leaking onto a moving/rotating part like a belt/fan/pulley. That will fling it everywhere in the engine bay.

My Defender 90 Puma leaked some oil the other and looking in the engine bay it looked like watery oil all on one side - see photo. I'll crawl underneath later to see if there is a leak (perhaps I didn't tighten the oil filter tight enough recently). Just surprised it is right at the top of the bay can see it all over the battery isolator:

The Vacuum Pump is a plausible cause. Here are some links to a few of discussions on the Vacuum Pump issue:

Yep a bit of oil around the wabco vacuum thing. I see some people suggesting it doesn't always need replacing - seems a bit strange as I know Landys are awesome but self-repair seems a bit much to hope for!
Replacement Transit pumps and gaskets are cheap as chips on Fleabay. I've got a spare buried in the back of the truck for remote area work.
You may get away with just a gasket if the mating surface isn't warped (which I think is the main cause if failure?).
It was the other way round when I replaced a transit one recently, was cheaper through LR than Ford. had great joy telling the owner he has a 'landrover' part in his engine compartment now....
