LT95 gearbox-transfer oil migration -which way does it go?

I recall a thread about oil migrating between the gearbox and transfer or vice-versa, when a seal between the two leaks.

Can anyone confirm which way it tends to move when this happens? ie from transfer to gearbox or gearbox to transfer?

I noticed today my gearbox oil was down somewhat, probably more than what could be accounted for by the small leak from the threads on the filler plug (which now has thread tape on it)

The transfer oil was overfilled slightly at the last service (I filled it from the top) so checking transfer oil levels is inconclusive in this case.

In your case a balance tube will not work.

Logically the flow should be from the gearbox to tfr case, as the oil level in the gearbox is higher than the tfr case but it seems the oil generally goes from tfr to gearbox - pressure must be higher in the tfr case.

If you fit a balance pipe solder over the hole of the nipple you put in the filler of the gearbox and then drill a tiny hole in it.( like 0.5MM)

Otherwise going up a big hill a lot of oil will go to the transfer . I was always afraid with mine that I would starve the gearbox.

Transfer case to gearbox oil migration is caused by a leaking seal on the main shaft between the gearbox and transfer case. The balance tube is a workaround. It doesn't fix the problem.
If the oil is moving the other way, you have other issues wether it be worn seals or worn splines etc.
It may be time to rebuild the gearbox. Refresh all the seals.

Thanks for the replies. I will lower the transfer oil to the correct level and keep a closer eye on both levels. Hopefully the low level in the gearbox was just the external leak although it was 3-4 cm below the filler hole....

In Fact it isnt the Seal either , Its the differential in speed between the output shaft and the output gear Spacer . Nothing to do with Seals !!
Fitting the old equaliser hose is a cheap and nasty way out .
You need to "peg" the output spacer to the shaft splines so they rotate at the same speed and dont induce a Pump effect .
Someone on here should have a blow by blow walkthrough on how to do it , there are a few things to Know about !!!

    1. If you're losing sleep and $$ deprived do the by-pass and sleep well for many years. Get a plumber mate to do it, slab should suffice.

    2. Do nothing and all will probably be good if you watch the levels. Keep in mind, though, if there is no oil on the ground then there probably is no oil in it anywhere.

    3. You can reco the whole thing, spending an elegant sufficiency, and still be no better off than 2.

    cheers, DL

350RRC, I cant understand why you dont know why this "tranfer" things happens .
It takes about 1 Hour to fix it PERMANENTLY , if you care to Understand the root cause of the Problem .
