Always wondered what a turbo'd 3.9 would be like in the RRC..... Its low compression, has the room in the engine bay.....

A V8 Rangie sideways at 120kmh down the freeway with a blow off valve poppin' its head off as you pass a Prado....

    WOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

The motor i bought a few years ago brand new(bottom end) and reco heads.Hasnt done more then 40.000k's.Its a high comp bottom end if that makes any difference. It use to be my every day car and never missed a beat or made a noise. The motor was very quiet and smooth. Now on start up it sounds like a tappet noise. But slowly goes away.I took it for a drive and the noise was really bad.It sounds like one really bad tappet sound.I think it is coming from the left bank at the back.
It doesnt lose any fluid and still has good power.Just really noisy. You can hear it on youtube under turbo rover.Because it hasnt been started in a few years could it have some crap blocking the oil galleries.I did change the oil before i started it.I spoke to a oil specialist and he said to put 1 litre of deisel in and run it for a few minutes to clear the oil galleries. Is this a good idea? Then dump the oil and replace.
    Any ideas would be great.

    Thanks

Chris dont panic, if it wasn't rattling when you parked it up there is no reason why it would be doing it now. The most probable reason that you have a noise, is that carbon from the combustion chamber has dried out and migrated to the squish area of the piston, and is hitting the cyl head at tdc. Try pulling the plugs and adding some oil or wd40 soften the carbon. Or you could just thrash it for a few minutes.

    Update

Well hopefully some good news.I did the old diesel in the oil trick . Let it idle for a few minutes and then went around the block. And after getting back there was no noise .Dropped the oil and put in some fresh oil and a new filter.Started it up again and the noise wasnt there! I can tell you i had a smile on my face.I will start it up again tomorrow when the engine is cold and see what happens. But it all looks good.
Thanks for all your help guys.

    Cheers

    Chris
