D1 wont start. It is ****ing me off!!!!

Hi All, I have seached the forums for a similar issue but can't seem to find anyone else with the same issue.
The problem is that my 98D1 is very tempreramental. It may work fine for 3 days but then will keep having problems starting. It turns over but wont fire up. It also cut out on me while stop at lights or while I was moving slow. I have taken it to a mechanic a number of times on a tow truck but he can't find the cause as most of the time when he has it it keeps starting. When he did have it for a time when it didn't start he thought it was the ignition module but the problem just came back. I rely on this car and am a fan of discos but if I can't find the problem, which I'm sure is very minor but I don't think I would get one again as it's costing me more money than it's worth.

    Thanks for reading

Sounds like an ignition module problem.Once they heat up they tend to cut out like yours. They can be very temperamental.Just change it over to a new one and see how you go.Also try your rotor button.

    Here ya go ....
Some reading material for you ..... http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...er-switch.html .... Read it all the way through

Instead of just winding the motor over & over till it starts ..... Do it this way

.... Turn the key to ON and then wind the motor over for a split second / STOP & turn off the key / Then restart it again .... Does it start??

Sounds a little familiar. My 97 TDi D1 was doing similar, bloody annoying when it cut out driving down the road at 100klm. After a couple of mechanics expert opinions, which I had to pay good $$ for! I went surfing the net. Short answer the immobilizer spider was the most promising to explain the faults.

Pulled the dash apart on the weekend and got to the immobilizer box, popped it open and yep, a few solders knackered. Swapped it for a genuine LR part (seems they know about the problem) that bypasses the immobilizer. Problem fixed.

Do a search for land rover spider fix.

The definitive spider fix is here:

The Definitive Alarm Spider Post - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

and it also has some diagnostics. A worn ignition switch could also cause the problems you describe.

    cheers, DL

I have already replaced the ignition module. They have tested the coil and I have been informed that all is good there. It's just weird that for some reason from time to time it won't start. And yes it is a V8

Spider or ignition switch. Easy to by pass the spider, dud ignition switch can cause weird intermittent probs. Turning over but no V8 noise IME, and weird shutdowns when it has been running fine.
