Thanks for the comments so far. I appreciate them, and any more would add to my case with Land Rover warranty.
I'm pretty sure most of the slack is from the transmission. Rocking the jacked rear wheel back and forth creates clunking from the transmission...I can't determine exactly where but suspect it is within the transfer case.
The axle splines aren't too bad.
While it has got worse, it was even bad from new. So bad that it generated such violent back lash under gear changes with centre diff locked on High Country trails that gears would grate due to prop shafts oscillating back and forth with release of wind up. (More play in neutral than the gears you shifted to and from, if you know what I mean.) It has rarely happened under other 4x4 conditions, but the High Country required centre diff locked, but often had harder surfaces when it flattened out at gear changes.
It seems from comments so far that this amount of slop should not be regarded as normal then.

That sounds like Transfer case to me for sure Brid, I have heard personally of 2 Pumas that have had their cases replaced for excessive backlash and noises, along with rear differential in 1 of them. Problem was there from new and eventually got resolved after many complaints.
Keep chasing, and definately get Warren etc at MR to check it and report for you. They know their stuff.
