I forgot to point out that a 15W-40 engine oil is equivalent in viscosity to an 75W-90 gear oil.

SAE 90 gear oils range from 13.5cSt to <18.5cSt@ 100*c
SAE 40 engine oils range from 12.5cSt to <16.5 cSt@100*C

SAE110 gear oils range from 18.5cSt to <24cSt@100*C
SAE 50 engine oils range from 16.5cSt to <21.9 cSt@100*C

Oh, and of those 75W-90 gear oils i posted above, the Motul Gear 300 is the thinnest at sub zero temps.

It has a ridiculously high Viscosity Index of 222.
How it fairs long term regarding shear I'll find out, but so far it's probably the nicest oil I've used in the R380 in upshift performance.

The flinger came from All 4x4 in Newcastle. The viscosity cannot be directly campared from engine oil to gbox oil. It is a different scale. There are lots of light extrem pressure gbox oils out there and has been may of debates about which on this forum. I'm currently using Castrol VMX 80 in the box and transfer but have just bought a 20l of penrite tranaxle 75 which is penrites equivelant to VMX80 and heaps cheaper.This was recomended to me by a mechanical engineer who has worked in the lub business around the Hunter Valley coal mines for over 20 years. Rick 130 where is the deep north of the upper hunter??? I'm in Scone much past Murra and you on the liverpool plains??

The oil ranges are directly comparable, that's why I listed kinematic viscosities, not the SAE ranges.

Unfortunately the only SAE chart I have is out of date so it doesn't show the newer SAE 110 range which splits both SAE90 and 140 ranges, but i'll post it up anyway to show how they compare.

I'm just south of Murra mate, (used to be Timor) not too far away. ;)

The problem is when they are cold.
I had a sheared oil pump in an LT95 which had 90 in it in Saudi.

From the chart 20 engine oil CST at 40c about 72. Probably not entirely accurate as 20W ( as in 20W 50 motor oil) is at 0c is it not?

If it was a straight 90 the stuff is like treacle at 0*, I'm talking about a 75W-90 which pours at least as easily as a 15W-40 around 0*.

Some are even better.

Motul Gear 300 75W-90 is 424cSt @0*C
Castol Syntrax 75W-90 is 868cSt @0*

Fuchs Titan Ultralube 15W-40HD Fleet engine oil is 1378cSt @0*

Unfortunately I can't really calculate under this as the oils don't exhibit a uniform viscosity increase much under 0* but I think that shows enough if you are savvy in choosing the right lubes.

i have seen a sump similar to the aftermarket one fitted here, but it has a gear in it that i believe is a gear pump for oiling the Transfer case....anyone know about these or their availablity???
