Who's running H.I.D head lights

I put new light assemblies and HIDs in my 90. HUGE improvement over standard.

However, they seem to randomly not work every so often, in that one side or the other will not power up. I rang the supplier (Hobzee something or other) as they were not cheapies, and they suggested a bad earth point, but so far have not been able to nail the problem.

So - when working - fabulous, but frustrating when only 1 headlight powers up.

I have sent an email to the NSW RTA asking about the legality referncing my 92 RRC with self levelling and headlight washers.

Let's see what they say. And I asked about whether there was an difference between HID high/low and HID high /halogen low.

thats what im worryed about, iv herd so many people complane that only one works at times, i just hope the kit im geting isent a cheap kit;)

but enything will be better then what i have now,

Try earthing direct to the battery, the instructions for mine suggested that, I have the right earthed to the main and the left earthed to the auxillary.

Is the hydromat a proper SLS system?

Define proper...

When working correctly it is designed to maintain rear ride level irrespective of load. Does that make it a proper SLS?

OK - Thanks for that. Mine are just earthed to the body. Bit of a pain having the battery under the passenger seat at times like this!

Well the RTA were very little help.

They just attached a PDF of

Australian Design Rule 13/00 Installation of Lighting and Light Signalling Devices on other

than L-Group Vehicles.

I read through the whole thing which is a UN standard document and unbelievably long and verbose.

The only problems that I foresaw are para 6.1.9.1 page 47 which says the total light on high beam plus spots must be less than 225,000Cd which I presume to be candelas. Anyone know what total candelas of HID main beam & spots would be ?

And 6.2.9 page 53 where low beam must be max 2000 lumens.
there is virtually no mention of HID other than the definitions but lots of mention of LED, Infra red etc.
They talk about self levelling for low beam and the procedures etc.

So it looks like the RTA have no other vehicle inspection rules other than those pertaining to even number of lights, positioning etc.
All very strange.
I also looked the "Notes to Inspectors" yesterday and nothing specific to HID there.
Interestingly the ADR only applies to cars after October 1991. I think mine was built september 1991 so should not be subject to the ADR.

Hmm, comparing apples and oranges a bit here. A figure often cited is: a uniform 1 candela source emits 12.6 lumens. Not sure that this helps much though. Few artificial light sources would probably be considered 'uniform'.

As for Australian Design Rule 13/00, I think you will find there is simply a different design rule that must be complied with for earlier vehicles, not that no design rule applies.
