defender centre diff lock not working

    Hi,
    I have a 2001 extreme/defender 110.
On the beach on a slight incline on the weekend, in soft sand with the centre diff lock in.
CDL dash indicator light was on.
Rear wheels were spinning fairly rapidly/churning a lovely hole in the sand(I have a detroit locker in the rear), while the front wheels were pretty much not turning at all.
I tried pushing/holding the selector lever fully home, made no difference.
So i guess I have a CDL issue, any suggestions please on where to start, given that the dash light is coming on?

I was under the impression that the light is operated by a switch that the internals of the transfer case turn on. Therefore the linkage internally must be working.

Are you sure both front wheels were not turning? Maybe it was just the one you could see not turning.

jack up one front wheel and lock the locker, confirm its not working then try turning the thing on and off a few times...

When this happened to me I found it was the linkage bolt at the top nearest the shifter. It had come loose (very small nyloc nut) and even though the lever would move through its full distance the loose bolt would gobble up a small amount of travel up the top that translated to a substantial loss of travel down at the diff lock linkage.
I recall that I peeled back the rubber boot in the cab and with a bit of deft tool work nipped it up and prob solved.
