    Magnafilter

    Ladies & Gents,

I have been trolling the net looking for oil cleanliness solutions for work (mech engineer) and came across an intreging product i thought i would throw to the masses to see if anyone has picked up with it and seen how it goes.

The US based filter company BOSS have some magnetic filtration options that are primarily aimed at cars and the like. They look at inline filtration for trannies and steering systems and screw on adapters (still inline) for spin on filters for engines.

    The website is Magnafilter

Curious if anyone has comments on this, because i have seen some dodgy attempts at this type of filtration for cars in the past, but this seems to have the concepts and "big company" backing to be something worthwhile.

Look foward to seeing what you guys come back with.

    Cheers
    Al

I run one on my 1800cc V-twin and it's doing a good job.
Seems to be collecting the small amounts of metal in the engine.

This seems to be a slightly different application in that it is being used on transmissions where LR use magnets on the plugs and on power steering

"oil cleanliness solutions for work "(mech engineer) you say ?
obviously no relationship to " Reliability Engineering"

As mentioned on that other thread, IMO it's only addressing part of the problem.

In diesels, again only my opinion, a good by-pass filter like a Mann-Hummel centrifuge is a more elegant solution as it gets all sub micron particles, not just ferrous ones which means that in a diesel it's getting the soot that creates most all wear issues so addressing the problem before it occurs, unlike the magnet which is only a band-aid, catching the result of the wear after the fact

Often Fe problems are caused by the system operating outside of design parameters, (overheating, etc) miss-application of oil, eg. wrong type, wrong viscosity, wrong/incorrect specification (very common) not adhering to advised service intervals, etc,
Occasionally you will have a catastrophic component failure (eg Tdi valve stem caps) and the magnet won't stop that either, but it may catch some of the debris.

OK the TD5 has a by-pass filer so are these the same as the Mann H type or can we put a Mann H on a TD5?

    The TD5 centrifuge is a Mann-Hummel

That engine has probably the best oil filtration of any small diesel ever released.

    no relation at all :P

Rick i would agree that spinners are a better option. The mag filter option i'm asking about it a simple implementation though, something that can be installed during a scheduled service or the like as opposed to a full fit up.. I also hate reinventing the wheel and trialing stuff that doesn't work or is gimmick

Figured i'd ask to see if there'd been proven benefits, not just for land rovers
