    defender r380 5th gear noise

    i have a mad whine in 5th gear at cruise so not under power or on over run just at cruise in 5th im assumeing its a claged bearing allowing **** gear mesh is this going to be an easy fix or total over haul the trans is silent otherwise

    Can be done in the vehicle. Don't leave it for too long, as the more you drive it, the more it costs....

    R380 Whine

    The 5th gear noise is most likley caused by the undersized support bearing fitted to the rear of 5th gear. I 'borrowed' some pics so you can see where it is. It is the small bearing in the second picture - don't get me started on how dumb this is!

    This bearing delaminates (hard facing comes off) causing grating or whining and often can be the only thing wrong in the box. If caught early enough is a cheapish fix, if left; well bits of bearing material end up everywhere.

    I have not replaced on the vehicle as yet as others have advised so best of luck.

    And I have seen one where after the bearing eventually failed and the owner kept driving it, the shafts were spread apart enough to strip teeth off the 5th gears. THAT was a fair bit more expensive

    well i can see its a fairly **** poor bearing im fairly handy with the tools can it be done with out pulling the whole lot out or am i just ****ing in the wind if i can rip the tbox out and get to it would be great.
