-Yes you can put a 396 in place of the spacer in the water seperator at the rear.
-Some people mentioned putting a new filterhead with 396 and glass bowl in place of the factory filter in the engine bay. And reported breakages!
I like the rear seperator to do its job and have sufficient volume to hold plenty of muck. In fact I have two, one for each tank.
I like the volume of filter media in the factory filter.
With appropriate maintenance - OEM works!

I am currently in the thought process of changing the fuel filters on my 300Tdi Discovery... Am i correct in assuming that if i simply remove the top nut from the filter next to the tank and clean it out i can then simply put it back on without a new washer or anything of the sort?
Cheers, James.
If it's the same sedimentor as on a Defender yep, you'll get away splitting the halves and re-assembling without replacing the O rings, although eventually you should replace them if you do it a few times otherwise they may leak which being on the suction side of the pump isn't good.
old thread I came across.
on ryco filter web page they have a service bulleten-update part number for polimer replacment for glass bowl.updated due to in transit damage.
we have 2 sets of tractor glass bowl at work in stock.
the other thread about using standaline filter-our tractors have clear plastic bowl-and i found glass bowl replacments updates due to cracking for sale.
eyeball this thread.
have a look at the amount of crap in the FWS the FWS caught most of it and the filter I was using in the engine bay is now pulling duty as a gravity feed filter for part of my WVO filtering system.
Imagine what all that junk would do to your engines fuel supply if instead of being permitted to settle into the separator it was blocking the filter you put in.
