    Talking Lt85 to LT95 swap for the Isuzu

    My gearbox has been rattling in neutral and stops when you put the foot on the clutch. It is now starting to noticibly rattle in 3rd and 5th gears, so much that the rattle is noisier than the engine at the right rev range.
    I figure the bearings are on the way out so I had better make arrangement soon. The fluid levels are right and the noise is definitely from the front of the box, not the transfer case.

    After playing around with the ratio calculator on the ashcroft site, it appears that the gears on the LT85 with a 1.222 transfer case (what I currently have) have the same spread as a LT95 with a 1.003 transfer ratio, just with 1 less gear in the middle somewhere. The revs vary by 80rpm at 100km/h.

    So it seems the smart thing to do is change to the tougher LT95 gearbox, since I plan on keeping the car for a while yet. Changing the gearbox it no problem, but what are the extra pieces that I'll need? I have a transfer case out of a rangie with a 727tf sitting on the floor in the shed, so that's the 1.003 gears taken care of. I need to buy an LT95 though. There is one on ebay at the moment in Jimboomba.

    Bellhousing - Is different from a v8 to an isuzu, so I'll need the right one of those.

    Diff lock mech - My fathers RRC has the vacuum actuator. I'd like to keep the type I currently have where you push the low range lever to the left. The beay one apparently has this mod half done.

    Handbrake? Can I use my County one on an LT95? It seems larger than the ones I have seen on the LT95's.

    Clutch? Are these different of the same?

    Flywheel? Can I use my existing one?

    Speedo? Do I need a different cable? As it reads from the rear and the diff ratios are still the same, will it read correct or will I have to swap the drive gear from the current transfer case?

    Any other items I have forgotten?

    Any leads on where to get some of the missing pieces, preferrably close to the Gold Coast?

    This would be better in the Isuzu section of the forum.
    I have a 1985 county that I rolled and would be interested in swapping the LT95 and all the bits for an LT85 and all the bits.

    The LT95 is the old 4 speed box from the 2 door rangies which has the transfer case built into it. If you change to the LT95 you will not require the transfer case from the torqueflight gearbox. Isn't the LT85 the heavier duty military spec gearbox which is apparently better than the LT95?

    NO. The Lt 95 is a 4 speed and is fitted to Australian military land rovers with a taper roller bearing kit as an upgrade to the transfer. The LT85 is a 5 speed box, made by Santana in Spain and doesn't last behind Isuzu's as well as the LT95.

    Depending on what vehicle you get the LT95 out of, you may not need to change the tfr case gears. Certainly if it is out of a stage 1 v8 you will need to change them but most of the Range Rover Lt95s have good ratios (some even better) as do the Isuzu LT95s.

    Will changing over the vacuum operated cdl over the a mechanical CDL be easy = there is another thread somewhere where it seems it may not be as easy as thought.

    Not possible, the LT230 transfer case is different to the LT95, it is non compatible, the LT95 has the gearbox and transfer case in one piece, non seperable......well, within reason

    So you need to source the appropriate gearset, then there is sourcing a bellhousing etc, hence the conversion to truck box, well I'd think looks attractive

    Well that's a pain, considering everything from landrover pretty much bolts to anything else from landrover
