    Front prop shaft noise??

I have a '94 Defender that's lifted 2 inches. I have had a loud grinding noise/vibration for the past 2 years that appears when I am either in 4th or 5th and I remove my foot from the accelerator. As soon as I step on the gas it dissappears.

I have had the gearbox, transfer box and both front and rear diffs reconditioned. I also bought new aftermarket prop shafts front and rear and fitted these. The noise is still there.

The latest advice I have says the front propshaft is in phase and should be 18 degrees out of phase. When I speak to Land Rover they say the original front propshaft is 45 degrees out of phase. Someone has mentioned I need to put a series 2 propshaft in with some sort of conversion which will cost $1,000 because the vehicle is lifted.

Please help I have no idea what the real cure is.

A couple of simple things to check first are the gearbox mounts and the possibility of a floor or transmission cover bolt touching the gearbox or transfer case when it flexes under load. I know this sounds way off but I did have a similar grinding noise in a series vehicle years ago and a floor bolt that was longer than normal was the culprit. Every time you loaded it up especially in low range there was this horrible griinding noise. Worried hell out of me for ages until I found out what it was. Worth a check.

Go for a drive without the front propshaft and see if noise is still present.

This is a standard design issue with the 101 - it is the UJs operating at or over their angle design limits which makes the drive shaft move up and down in the slip splines, particularly if they are a but worn. In the 101 the issue has never been properly fixed but has been minimised by having the UJs changed to ones with a larger angular range and new slip splines however the best solution is to replace the gearbox end of the driveshaft with a double carden joint like was done with the series 3 V8s and the D2s.

My '95 has the EXACT same issue...

I have been meaning to drop the front prop and go for a cruise but haven't got around to it.

My County has that problem (2" lift as well), but its so bad its at any speed on overrun. The diff/gearbox rebuilder that does LR's warranty rebuilds swore it was just a gearbox mount squeaking...

    See the shiny spot? Yah.

I checked that on mine with your specific situation in mind Mark, but it doesn't appear to be touching anywhere.

My County, lifted 2", also has the vibration problem at 80km/h or so. I share Gary's opinion that it's the angle of the UJ on the front prop.
