I had floppy gear lever syndrome which turned out to be the grub screw holding the bottom bit of the lever to the selector shaft.
Before it went floppy I noticed something strange about the movement of the lever, as in when looking for first it would be possible to move it further to the left than usual to the point where it contacted the bottom of the dash. I thought this had been due to the loose grub srew but now I have fixed that it still does it.
It's really hard to explain but it just feels like there is more 'slop' in the lever than before and makes it hard to find the gears sometimes.
Most likely the "Railko" bush (spherical bush) that fits on the shifter mechanism. There are 2 (1 x large and 1 x small)
These are a plastic bush which give up after a while.

I have had 2 of those bushes fail on me, i keep a spare in the glove box. I dont bother taking the yolk off now, i just grind the edge down on the bush with a bench grinder and clip it in upside down. Some clown rounded the allen bolt off on the grub screw so i cant get the yolk off.

Sounds like the " L" shaped piece of metal that the bias springs has cracked ( common) when they spilt at the metal fold at the bottom, they twist from the force of the bias spring that supports the lever, this can cause it to move more to one side and some times gear changing is harder as the bias springs tend to help guide the lever. If you to test it by pulling the gear lever to the right middle and hold it then let go it should spring back to centre position, try it then by pushing to the left, hold it and le t it go, if the pressure on the bias spring is not as great it won't Fly back as fast or with the same vigor. The plate is very thin metal. cheap part or some weld a gusset to strengthen it..
Hokay, I can't find this, was this on the LT77?
Also can't find any Railko bushes. The knob on the bottom of the gear lever fits into a cup that sits in the yoke(?) which is held on to the selector shaft with a grub screw.
The bias springs sit on a couple of adjustable bolts on top of the housing.
Just can't work out why it's possible to move it so far to the left and there is so much slop.
Anyone have any pics?
You might have the earlier Type A LT77 as in following pic #1
Pic #2 shows the Bias Spring Plate on the later LT77 and R380, the plate is adjustable, you can move it side to side and put more tension on one bias spring or the other. The springs push against the plate and when they snap or crack the tension is lost on one side causing hard to locate the gear position. item number 9 on pic 2 shows the plate
