    disco 1 v8 oil leaks

ok , i know disco oil leaks have been done to death ,but i think i may have something else to add .sump leaks and or rear main leaks .I have posted previously about buying a 1999 disco v8 ,and fixing a few minor problems ,and the car runs beautifully......except a oil leak from the rear of the sump, which some including my grandson mechanic says was coming from the rear main seal.however i was not convinced... anyway the sump was off twice using miserable paper gaskets and the proper sealer, loctite i think.and still the thing leaked ,everybody said "i told you so"
so i said i will do the cursed thing my self, and make a proper investigation so lying flat on my back took sump off again (not that difficult) and immediately saw old gasket had adhered to the sump but not at all to alloy block , so problem no 1 . i then cleaned sump throughly .and put a straightedge over the sump flanges ,and what a mess ,firstly the punched holes in the flanges were standing proud of the flanges ,so no hope of sealing with paper gasket, second the flange at the rear of the sump was much narrower than the side flanges and was BOWED,betwen the 2 bolt holes to the tune of 25 thou ,which of course had to be straightened.
well to cut a long story short, purchased cork gasket material 3.2 m thick and cut my own gasket and used a liquid sealer (permatex aviation no 3)
no silicone rubbish, bolted sump up and one month later no leaks!!!
I now have a non leak landrover .grandson mechanic would not believe it and closely inspected my garage floor for telltale signs of oil,ah it's good to show these young bucks something...........Hartley

3.2m thick? That would be a tree! And you'll struggle to get that over speed ramps

Sounds like you've managed to achieve what I'm currently aiming for, but have spent a darn sight more than just a bit of cork!

You used to get the cork sump gaskets for the P76. I developed the following technique: Flatten sump edge, coat both sides of the gasket with goo, assemble finger tight only, 24 hours later nip up the bolts and drive, check again after 1 month. You could keep sump leaks at bay for 1-2 years that way.

bee-utey i wonder if you can still get the cork gaskets for the old p76 it seems by what you say that i am not the only one to have come up with this problem. i have read somewhere that some of these motors had a alloy sump ,know anything about that?? should cure the problem.

I know, was just pulling your chain.

The oil leaks are a killer, glad you've found something that worked. For mine, I've replaced every gasket and seal, and all the cooler lines. So far no leaks!

(Will try putting some oil in it this weekend, and see if the same holds true then!)

Haven't seen one for years, ACL made the last gasket sets for the P76 and they use the same paper gasket as the Rover. I like the idea of making one, shouldn't take that long.

No P76 had an alloy sump, I imagine there would be some US Buick nuts who could supply one. A quick Google search found a dry-sump for a buick 215.

a steel sump is better off road as it bends instead of cracking or breaking......

and is also easier to repair by welding.......

the cork will leak after about a year as it slowly compresses and the bolts will come loose......
i would prefer the rubber gaskets as they are thinner and still flex enough to fill any gaps.....but last longer before they start to leak.......

but....as long as the sump is easy to remove......then whatever works is good......even if it only lasts 6 moths........
