my D2a TD5 is a pile of dog poo!

seems a bit wierd, but myself, phil, and phil have auto disco td5's one is a newer facelift i think (disco white) but mine and phil633's are similar vintage.. mine had 140k'ks on it.. how about you guys... as we all seem to be suffering similar economy wise (yet to see if mine is different)

We general fill around 80ish litres and recently have been getting about 550k's whereas the defender will get 800+ in urban driving for the same litres.. and ours is down from its record of 1000 for 87L on a run to margaret river, and yes it was chipped at the time...

the only spanner in the works is craige with his manual defender doing similar... but isnt that a 70l tank? so with roof rack etc its going to be rising...

there must be something common as economy gripes seem to be getting more frequent..

I am no mechanic at all. It is Friday afternoon. Don't know what you have planned fort he weekend. Maybe fill both Discos to the brim and go for a nice long drive, there must be a pub you want to go visit some 100-150 km away.
Swap drivers on the return leg to compensate for driving style. Back at the bowser compare distance travelled and fule used. If different you are none the wiser but at least you went to that pub you always wanted to visit. If the same you have some other things to check.

ok to clarify, i round up to 90L for some reason on here. these are the actualls.

total klm for that fuel was 176113-173130 = 2983klm to 511.39l used= 17.14L/100k thats what a D2 dose towing very heavy loads.

i did a simmilar test, i call it ''let the wife drive'':cool: she said it was how i drove the car...she didnt get any better in the economy stakes than i did. as for the other disco i drove it for 3/4 of the tank, drove it the same as ide drive mine (sorry mark:twisted:) and when i filled it up, 10klm after the light came on the odo was on 836klm.

When you fill up do you only fill to the first click or past? Steve above states he puts in around 80 litres.

As soon as the light comes on I go to Fill up it is usually within 20km, and at first click it is around the 76 to 77 litre mark, this will get me around another 550km until low fuel light. For a number of years now I fill right up the neck to the ridge just under the cap this is approx another 12 litres whch brings the fill to around 88 litres. This will get me approx 630km.

As I said I have not gone anywhere near the extent you have to find the problem, only a couple of minor things like MAF etc, but then your issue appears to be worse, and your range has decreased where as mine has not chaged since I got it in 2003.

I found running without the roof rack increases the range by approx 40km.

I honestly cannot think of anything you haven't tried, but I only have basic mechanial knowledge from the dealing with parts point of view than actually dealing with how they work, sorry.

Just thought, I have had to replace my fuel pressure regulator twice has that been a problem with yours?

By the way in response to Steve my odo reads 176.5k at present.

ok.... back to basics....

have you got a roof rack/other load thats not being accounted for?

assuming thats no.

with 2 identical engine setups (read same belt driven accessories) pull the serpentine belts off and turn each pully by hand in the direction of rotation dont forget that if you have the ACE and AC you will need to actuate the system while you are turning the pully to get a true read of both in action and when its idle.

if all that comes up equal swap do the basic viscus fan check and then if you think thats a little inconclusive swap the viscus units (fan and all) from one to the other and take it for a 100km test drive. check your consumption again.

failing that the only other thing I can think of that can be causing you issues is your Auto, grab the rave and head through the testing procedure for it, I suspect you may have a failing TC or a dragging clutch pack in the auto.

i neck the fuel right to the top, i also have a roof rack, its very lite and not bulky and i can see it would have an effect at highway speeds but i wouldnt expect as much at 60kph, thats where my speedo sits most of the time..to and from train stations.

the FP reg has been changed twice before i got the car, but for ****s and giggles im going to do it again and also fit a new fuel pump.

for as long as ive had the fuel pressure gauge fitted ive always seen 4.0-4.5bar of pressure, yesterday i drilled out the return restricter in the fuel filter housing to see if there was any change? well nothing performance or idle/driving wise but the FP now is 3.8-4.5bar.
reading the rave manual it states that the FP should be at a constant 4.0bar? as nobody i know has fitted a FP gauge to a td5 i'll just replace the reg and compare the results??
what else do i have to loose cept more diesel, money and time...

ave the bloody FPR and pump alone.. thats not the problem, when they go off you get a loss of power.

get a side by side comparison of 2 vehicles in the same configuration and check the trans pan temp (by hand or by IR thermometer) after 1km at 20 KPH then again at 5Km intervals at increasing speeds...

PRior to starting this test get some 2 ways and have the secodn vehicle driven by someone who uses a similar preferably identical driving technique to yours.

the the roof rack is good for about 2k/l at 100kph and about 1k/l at 60. this increases with side or head winds.

Disconnect the MAF and see what that does, then plug it back in and see what happens?

with 2 identical engine setups (read same belt driven accessories) pull the serpentine belts off and turn each pully by hand in the direction of rotation dont forget that if you have the ACE and AC you will need to actuate the system while you are turning the pully to get a true read of both in action and when its idle. i havnt done this recently, but when i did it last the tentioner pulley was nice and smooth to turn the ac compressor with the clutch engauged felt like it was compressing, had a moving piston feel to it, with out the clutch it was smooth, the pas and ace also had some resistance but it felt more hydraulic than dead bearings and the alternator was also fine. only thing i havnt checked is the fan, but you can hear it kick in on hot days.

if all that comes up equal swap do the basic viscus fan check and then if you think thats a little inconclusive swap the viscus units (fan and all) from one to the other and take it for a 100km test drive. check your consumption again. i could probably just leave it off, im doing 10klm round trips to and from work atmo so i wouldnt expect it to get too hot, and i can always wire up the thermo fan to a switch just in case.

the only test in rave is a stall test, and heres the thing, with the stock mapping in its with in the 2600-2800rpm(2700rpm) range with the BAS map in its at 300rpm, but both mine and the test D2 have the exact same BAS file and both stall test at 3000rpm, so im assuming the TC is locking. ive even visually compaired oil samples from both autos..both clean and metal free, both nice and red, both smell as they should and not burnt, mine has 500klm on the oil the other has 15 000klm?

my heart still says that the auto's the culprit and its a lot of money to change just because. but atmo ide be happy to blow the money on a second hand one in the hope its dead..

I'm not sure that extra load caused by any of these things would be equivalent to hauling a heavy trailer - worth checking though.

I wouldn't waste more money on a reg an pump as I doubt that either is causing the problem. The fuel has to be going somewhere other than back the tank, so ...

... Your fuel consumption calculations seem accurate and you've checked your odometer with a GPS unit; it is making good power, not blowing smoke and the cam timing is correct. Where is it going? ... Still thinking ...

(My fuel consumption was much better than you are getting with a leaking regulator - it left a puddle of diesel wherever I parked)
