Dried out bearing. Fix soonest or it may ruin the housing. Or take it to Hills Auto Electrical at Bridgewater. He's quite good.
My Alternator has started to make a quite loud whirring noise. I is still working, would anyone have any ideas as to what has happened?

My alternator bearing is on the way out too. My local auto elec tells me that it's more cost effective to put a new, non genuine alternator in it ($650) rather then recondition the existing one.
Is he pulling my leg? It's a 97 Disco.
He`s pulling your leg.
Trev.
Thanks Guys. I knew I smelt bull**** from the fat turd.
Can anyone recommend somewhere in sth east Melbourne to get an alternator reconditioned?
If it wasn't my daily drive, I'd have a go myself but I can't afford to bugger it up!![]()
I'm going to have a crack at pulling mine apart and replacing the bearings tomorrow.
will let you know how I go.
Unss you have a good set of pullers with thin jaws to get under the pully, dont bother as you are only going to either break it or not get it off.
As to pulling it apart I didn't get that far as I found out after pulling it out that it is the power steeering pump that is noisy. but it bolts holding it together so it is able to be pulled apart.
Thanks for the info... I've been doing some additional digging. I'm definitely going to pass on the reconditioning option if I can get a new genuine unit for around $200.
It seems there were two different types of alternators supplied as OEM on this Disco - a Lucas unit and a Magneti-Marelli unit. My truck has the Italian alternator.
From what I can gather they are both designated part number AMR3107 and rated for 100 amps. However, the "call out" part numbers are different http://www.landroverclassicparts.com...Product=106103 (AMR3107 and AMR4247).
Am I correct in assuming these two alternators are interchangeable and if I order AMR3107 I'll get one or the other but it won't matter which?
