    What winch?

Depends what you want it for.

Have you considered a Tirfor?? (I'll leave you to do a search as it has been discussed at length before...)

Plastic rope is great on a capstan. Three turns around the bollard thing and away you go. Just look at all the yachts around the world.

If I could have got one for the front of my Stage 1 that's what I'd have had.

Never heard them called that before.

They are no safer or dangerous than any other winch type and obviously correct winching technique is required in any event. I have winched a Mitsi Pajero with a blown engine (not mine) in soft sand up an uphill distance of about 70m. It was slow but using a snatch block made it quite easy.

It's all in the technique, using the whole body on the handle with the winch on its side makes it almost effortless. Push with the legs and not the arms and back

Admittedly the PTO winch I now have on mine would have had it up a whole lot quicker but I finished with a healthy glow and spent the afternoon on the beach doing something more useful than baking.

    Now, speaking of PTO winches.

Thomas PTO outputs bolt straight onto the LT95 for the Rangie. They are readily available from what I have seen (the one I have is the rare version) and you can pick up an old PTO winch cheaply, or get an old Thomas electric one back take the electric motor and gearbox off the front, make a couple of minor modifications and hey presto, you have a PTO winch. Or, Ramsey, ... they are all much the same dimensions.
