    What winch?

I want to put a winch on my 85 Rangie.

I will modify the non winch ARB bar to fit. Thinking of an XD9000. Are those Tabor things any good?

    Any suggestions?

from my experience Warn is probably the best from a reliability and re-sale point of view.

Older style Warn high mounts are especially good, but are hard to get and often will require re-build before use. Low mounts like XP9.5 are very powerfull with a 6hp motor and so far I've not had any probs even with one even on heavy straight line pulls.

Avoid X9s as fitted to lots of Toyotas as they have a poor brush plate design that is prone to melt downs. The gearbox on these is however very good, and a Warn 6hp motor bolts straight on and creates an animal

I was even thinking about a Chinese Special. How about a TigerZ 12000lb comes with plastic rope. $945. Probably good enough, I only want use it to take my mother to church on Sundays.

I've pulled three different branded Chinese winches apart owned by 2 different mates including my own to check the internals for comparison and I'm totally convinced all are made by the same manufacturer.

I don't have any real issue with products being re-branded although, when different 4WD companies refer to their product as being "original" I see red

All the winches needed to be re-greased by the way as the Chinese 'grease' seems to be made of coconut oil mixed with cooking fat

The gearbox is good quality and sturdy as is the housing. I tidied up the elex and wait to see how long the motor will last although, my mate's winch has done quite a bit of work without and hassles to date.

I bought mine new for $500 off a guy who couldn't make it fit his new Prado. I've removed the steel cable in favour of synthetic rope (Soon to arrive) so total will be $860

I think you have a bargain as well mate!

I have a Tigerz11 on my 110 and a 2nd hand Warn 8274 for my IIA. Both cost about the same.

Tigerz have a very good reputation. Their sealed control boxes and remote controls are very nice and easy to use.

The Tigerz11 stuff seems to be a cut above the other chinese stuff.

The Tabor isnt a bad winch either,it is actually a Warn winch, just made with the older motor and made in Mexico if memory serves.I am sure someone will correct me if I am incorrect....

Actually the price is $845 I made a typo.

I like the idea of putting new grease in to replace the Wok scrapings.

I have a capstan on my Series 1

    Cheers

Had a capstain winch on my old SIII wagon. Great winch, ran off the front of the engine. The main difference is, battery winch doesn't need engine going to get out of trouble but only good for a short period of time before batterys go flat wheras capstain winch runs as long as the engines running. Other good thing with the capstain winch is that you can winch continuously with anything. You can join ropes, cables, chain, fencing wire etc together and still winch. Dunno how it would go with plastic rope though as slippage may damage the rope.
