    Quadrajet won't idle

hi all, I have just aquired a 84 RRC with 350 chev and torquefright auto, not quite in running order, problem is starts instantly with a bit of thottle, and will run smoothly at about 1800 RPM but reduce thottle below this point and it cuts out, stopping with a bit of a spit back through the carby, I'm told the carby has been reconditioned and the dissy replaced with a new electronic one to try and fix this, any ideas where a amateur mechanic should start? Trying to find some history on what has been done but have not been able to contact previous owner as yet.
    Thanks David.

Try and see if it will idle with your hand partially over the top, causing less air/ enrichening it. have seen lots of Q-jets with internal airleaks in the idle circuit causing excessive leanness and weak and sometimes no idle fuel.

The airleaks are caused by overtightening the carb down to the manifold, distorting the top cover. This is made even worse on those equipped with a resin baseplate insulator.

The one I had on my WB 308 was so bad, I replaced it with a holley which was a far worse carb but at least it idled

The Q-jet is worth persevering with, IMHO they are a fantastic performance carb with good 'economy' if driven on the primaries.

As justin said, try and restrict the airflow. You may also try getting a bottle or better still,a spray bottle full of water and spray around the carby, checking for any vacuum leaks and any vacuum hoses that haven't been plumbed.

Could be time for a kit. As stated, either idle circuit needs attention or you have an vacuum leak.
A gas analyser should give you a few answers as to the overall tune of it right throughout the rev range.

Incorrect or sticky float level also causes issues with these in much the same fashion as a Weber carb.

    Cheers

    Andrew.

Sounds like an air leak. Q-jets, in spite of their complexity, are almost trouble free. Most problems with them are human caused.

    Justinc rules,,
but I'm not sure I'd want my hand over the top of a carby thats known to backfire--

Only put the hand over at idle Pedro! Just to prove the idle circuit leanout issue.

Oh, and according to my better half, I DON'T 'rule'

A bit of an update on this, drove it home runs smoothly and go's real well if revs are kept above 1800, lucky the automatic can engage smoothly at these revs, spoke to a mechanic who had looked at it, he said don't be to quick to condemm the Q-jet, it could be a camshaft timing problem, suggested I do a compression test, if the cam timing is far out it would give low compression evenly across all cylinders, the engine seems quite sound there is no visible blow-by fumes with the crankcase breathers disconnected. So out with the old compression tester and I got 125psi across all cylinders, which is what I got from the 186 in the SII so I concidered it normal, however going around a second time number 2 had dropped to 75psi, keep cranking and it drops to zero, leave it stopped 30 seconds or so and it comes back up to 125psi, this is quite repeatable and the compression seems to go down as oil pressure comes up but this could be coincidence. only cyl 2 the others are normal. Is this strange or what! I can't think of a theory for whats happening here.
