    Question AGM battery top-up?

    G'Day All,
    Ok, here's a curly q.
Got an older Exide Orbital blue top as a second battery. It's at the end of it's service life (dying) so I'm going to play with it. My question is:
What can I use to top it up? My guess is distilled water; but how will I know if I have put in enough (through the valves under the plate on top)?
I guess it wouldn't have been flooded originally, but it does look a bit dry and crusty, looking down the tiny valve hole.
    Any suggestions?

    Cheers,

    Dave

I dont think they can be rejuvinated as the one I have is sealed.
Having said that it may be possible to fill with a battery rejuvinator solution using a syringe, but would be time consuming and may not get a result.
ASFAIK they are absorbed glass matt so flooding the battery may not help as it would have to be absorbed into the glass matt. This is what makes them unique and safe in rollovers and positioning.

Cheers mate, yep I have prised off the top seal so now I can refill mine via the small valve holes! But as I mentioned not sure with what. Reading about it it seems dist water would be allright as the "mat" just means it's a mat of fibres soaked in 'stuff'. That's why I just ask - is it just dist water I should use? I presume so...

Hi davros, I would recommend you use extreme caution with regards to trying to fill an AGM battery.

With AGM type batteries, unlike a flooded wet cell battery where you simply top up the electrolyte with water, an AGM is usually damaged beyond repair once the electrolyte either dries out or leaks.

In an AGM, the electrolyte is suspended between the the glass mat and is in a gel form. Just adding water will not improve the battery’s performance and you risk the water becoming contaminated once its inside the battery and this could make the water conduct to the point that you could actually short the battery out and could even cause it to explode if the battery still has a charge.

    Is it gel? Here

a description puts gel and agm batteries in different categories...

Yonks ago you used to have gel batteries called Torque Starters. Great stuff we thought! But they would not tolerate over charging, that would dry them out real quick. We drilled a hole in the tops and added about 500ml of water and shook it around. They usually lasted another month or so after that. Basically a short term answer only. Rigorously capped charge voltage is needed for any batteries without refillable cells.
